Backhoe Subframe For My 25 Yr Old Yannie

Anyone bored enough to read my posts will know i recently acquired a once-used Woods BH6000 backhoe. It was a sub-frame mount hoe, which came new on a NH TZ25. I'm building a sub-frame to attach this to my trusty ole Yanmar YM186D. First thing i had to do was get two new hydraulic lines made so that i would be able to power the hoe. Since i couldn't find one of the ninety degree fittings i needed locally, off to the Parker Store 40 miles away. I don't relish the drive there.... but every time i've had a problem finding something loacally, the Parker Store has a bin full of them on the shelf. A hundred and forty dollars later, my hoe moves under my tractors power !

This where i'll start. Since i can no longer use the belly mower that came with my tractor (since i installed a FEL), i'll use the mounts from the belly mower... modify and reinforce them for their new duty.

I went to the local welding shop and bought some four inch channel for the sub-frame. Knowing i'll need a bunch of tabs, i had them cut some flat stock and punch holes where required. Though this might be cheating.... i have no large drill press (yet), and no milling machine.... and figured this would save me hours. The shop has a huge-mungous shear/punch, that makes me hide my fingers in my pockets every time it makes a stroke.

I've made a pair of plates out of 3/8s...... same thickness as Woods uses. I used four one inch grade five bolts for the mounting pins. I've shouldered all of them front and back with oversized washers for extra support. Keeping the backhoe mounted to the subframe on four pins will (at least in theory) keep the break-out force the same on my tractor, as it was designed into the New Holland it was originally made for.

I'm connecting the front of my subframe to my loader sub-frame. There is a crossmember under the front of the bellhousing, and it ties into the rear of the motor, as well as the bellhousing. The loader came with a pair of plates that go forward from the rear of the motor, to the front bumber/weight bracket.... doubling the front sub-frame of the tractor. Pinning my backhoe subframe here not only ties the backhoe to the motor/bellhousing, but creates a tie in to the front of the tractor too. There are two good sized bosses midway back on the transmission housing that i will also tie into. The MMM also tied in there, making it a no brainer.

I'm boxing in the channel from behind the rear mounting point, to ahead of the transmission mount. I've welded in a sleeve for the pins to slide through. All mounting pins (six of them) going through the subframe will be common 3/4" hitch pins. The sleeves are something i found in the local Lowes, 3/4 id , 1" od, X 2" long. I used the same sleeves on the brackets for the loader x member.

Of course.... the problem with me making something like this, is that it always LOOKS like i made it. I've spent hours in the past few days welding and grinding.... trying to stay patient. I've got the bulk of the subframe assembled. It will also have a 7/8ths pin coming up through my draw bar mount from the bottom. With any luck this will help align the sub frame whenever i'm attaching it to the tractor.... it is tapered at the end. This is about where i called it a day today. Tomorrow i'm hoping to box in and reinforce the plates that the backhoe mounts to.

Well, i spent most of my weekend working on my subframe. I went back to the local welding shop with some diagrams on paper. They cut out a bunch of gussets out of 3/8ths plate with their hydraulic shear.
