Bucket dentistry: better teeth for b/h & FEL bkts

I'm not sure what the teeth on mine are made of, but they are the weld on type, and I know that welding cast iron is beyond my skills. They didn't cost very much either, so I can't imagine how it would be cost effective to try and build them up with welding rod. To me, that would take allot of time and a huge number of welding rods.

Have you priced replacement teeth?

Eddie, yours are welded on and do not have separate holder and tooth?

The two types of ripper teeth I showed above are from AgriSupply & cost
under $5 each. The OEM cast teeth for my Prairie Dog are about $15. The
pictured commercial pin-on tooth was about $8, but I bought that last
month in Montana.....it would be twice that here in CA. That is for a future
project and mounts on a 1.5" wide shank.

Finally, I have never used "hard facing" welding rods, but they are WAY
more expensive than 7018 or 6011 rods.

I have a New Holland 555E commercial loader/backhoe, so that might make a difference. I bought new teeth for it a few years ago, and don't remember the exact price, but it wasn't very much.

The teeth that I bought slide over existing holders on the bucket. They sort of look like small, stubby teeth on the bucket. I just put them in place and welded them on. It was real simple and easy.

The tooth holders (shanks) I have seen for industrial hoes were forged out
of weldable steel. The way they look, they could pass for cast. I bought
3 of those for about $15 ea back in the mid 90s when I made the bucket for
my CADDigger. The teeth to fit them were $5 or $6, and were designed to
crimp on. I welded them on. My dealer used to have bins of all sorts of
teeth and shanks.....kinda like a candy store.

Here is a Kioti FEL bucket with my shanks and teeth added on. A paid
welder did the job for the owner of this tractor. Too bad he put the teeth
on the shanks backward and failed to space the shanks out over the whole
bucket edge. AND he fully welded the teeth on the shanks. Oh well, you
get the idea.

The owner reports they work great....now he can dig with the loader.

I never met the welder, but his rates are good and his welds look good.

It is jobs like this that have turned me into a DIY person for almost
everything. You can appreciate that I am sure, JB.

Those weld-on teeth look like the ones I buy from my JD dealer for my little hoe. I tried crimping them on for the first few years, now I just tack them in place. Go thru a set a year with our rocky soil. (actually dirt covered rock)
I think the last set cost $7 each

The teeth look good but now the bucket is limited in versatility with them permenantly attached. I think a better deal - for multiple use - is if they were made onto a detachable frame so that the smooth edge of the bucket can still be used for grading. Of course if digging/loading is the only use of the bucket they're OK.

Exactly! Some jobs take skills, some take special tools or fancy equipment. Most just take time, thought, patience and above all -- care. I found that often I could buy the semi-fancy tools needed for a job and the total cost would be the same as paying to have it done. But, I ended up with the tool and a tad more skill. There are now a lot of tools in the shop. Not so sure about the level of skills:rolleyes:
