I have a Lansky sharping set. I suck at using a stone by hand/eye. I'll check out the DMT stuff. My latest pocket knives are really hard steel.

I have more sharpening tools kicking around than anyone would ever need. For putting the final touch on a cutting edge I like a belt sander. I have 3. They have 1 inch wide belts and are cheap to buy. Two of mine have different grade very fine metal cutting grits. (I have several belts in many grades of grit hanging on the wall) The last one is a leather belt. ( I have several different polishing/cutting pastes I use on it) It really depends on what you are sharpening what kind of edge you need. A perfectly polished edge isn't always best. A rough edge cuts better through meat as it acts like a saw. The belt sander can even be used on curved blades as you can put a curve in the belt from behind as you work the edge.

I used to use all sorts of things and finished of with jewlers rouge. But for the last 20 years, I just hit it a coupla times with the acusharp and go on.. Makes a knife sharper person out of anyone!. I still have the ones I had 15 years ago. I prepare a new edge with the old one and finish off with a newer one. Bought a knock-off at wally world yesterday for 3.50. I'll see how it does..

good set of oil stones for good cutlery, chisels, etc.... file or belt sander for tools like axes, machete, etc...

Use a "Smiths" 3 side rock (in the cedar holder) with a smooooooth steel. Usually end up with a great edge. On a side note if anyone hasn't tried the new Case XX wire rope damascus pocket knife.......you are missing out. The best knife I've ever carried. Used to carry carbon steel Boker but this case puts it to shame. Never liked stainless in a knife.

While I have assorted oil stones and diamond stones as well I have also attained fine edges using 'wet or dry' sandpaper (the kind used by car painters) on either a piece of plate glass or my cast iron saw table top along with a drop or two of 3-in-one oil!
I do a fait bit of wood carving as well as leather work and SHARP is essential. I even resharpen my 'OLFA' blades as leather really chews up edges. The older the oilstone is, generally the better I like it. (I probably buy every one I see at yard sales!) The most important element in a cutting blade is the steel used. Give me a real old butcher's knife, all rusty that nobody will touch, and it becomes my bestest one of all! Shucks my best wood gauges are aircraft grade chrome molly tubing welded to a steel shaft with a homemade handle that I turn on my lathe. I have made many lathe tools using files as well, and they sure heep an edge! My best hunting knife is from a 12 inch nicklson file with a homemade leather grip. That baby can quarter a 1000 lb moose without a honeing, sure keeps an edge ans as I recall that homemade knife has always been honed on 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper! Stainless=no-no in my book! (well, table knives=OK)
