All six of the splitters I've built have been horizontal. Vertical would have been the back breakers in my case. Of course, mine have all had conveyors across from the operator to take away the split wood.

Defective what kind of conveyor do you have? I believe that an old haybale conveyor would probably work.

Exactly!
Bale conveyors with a little structural improvement & angle at appropriate spacing across the chains. With a hydraulic motor pulling the chains, it'll run all day (or, at least until the trucks are all full...)
