I am getting ready to build a dethatcher that will mount on the front of our Kubota RTV500. I have a question for those of you who have built a dethacther, what spacing did you use for the tines on your machine?

Thanks

There was a member, MadReferee, on here who had designed and built a dethatcher. Plans were drawn up and many people got copies of those plans. However, I do not believe that they are still actually posted on the site. I have attached those plans here for future builders.

Since he made the dethatcher in 2 parts the working part could easily be used for your purposes.

I've just finished building a small one that mounts to the front of a lawn sweeper. Can dethatch and sweep up the thatch at same time.

I patterened mine off this one. www.agri-fab.com - Universal Front-Mount Tine Dethatcher

I have an older Agri-Fab sweeper that is designed a little different that today's models. While using the design, I made it out of stronger materials. Turned out quite nice. I initially bought the tines and clamps from Agri-Fab. After initial trial is was apparent the flimsy clamps weren't up to the job so replaced with a design made from 1/8 X 1" bar-stock. There is a gauge wheel at the front to control tine depth. I set mine up to provide ~1/4" tine clearance when wheel is firmly on the ground. There is also a hook attached so dethatcher can be raised off the ground when not in use.

Sorry I don't have pics of the one I built, yet.

Tines were $1.66/ea from Agri-Fab and bought the 1" OD by 1/8" wall tubing from local source. Oh, the tines are 1/8" dia and not likely suitable for larger more robust designs.

Not sure I'd want to use this on LARGE areas but for typ lawn sized areas it is just fine and being able to sweep up the thatch at same time is a bonus.

I built this a couple winters ago. I spaced my tines so the tines in the front exactly split the tine in the rear. That way I had a tine scratching every 3" or so across the whole width.
