need info on welding chain gaurds for brushog

just purchased a 5' kk rotary mower.i,ve done a search and seen some posts on chain gaurds but since i weld i was thinking of just bolting on a flat plate[1/4"] and welding say the top 3/8" link to the plate?why would these need to be replaced[say on a rod?].if one got damaged i could just cut if off with a tourche.any body have any pics.
