Ways of sketching out new ideas, CAD, Paint, Pencil / Paper
I like to draw out many projects on paper before i get started.
Sometime the old just wing it appraoch is ok too.
Lately I may take a picture of something and try to make ideas with the paint program on the computer.
I have no CAD program and maybe it would be something I should look into.
Good old pencil and paper is usually the way I try to figure things out.
How to you plan out your projects?

Still use the ole pencil and paper method. It's just faster and easier to erase and adjust.

I use AutoCAD but that's an expensive tool to have around if you don't need it for some other reason.
The best freeware CAD package I know of is Draftsight.
Free CAD software* for your DWG files: DraftSight lets professional CAD users, students and educators create, edit and view DWG files. DraftSight runs on Windows®, Mac® and Linux. - Dassault Systèmes

Try Google sketch-up. It's a free drawing program that let's you do 3D. I used it to layout my soon to be pole barn house.

I like to work things out in 3 view drawings myself or in a 3D program like Sketch Up or Auto Desk Inventor. Take a look here for free downloads and for instructions there are lots of videos on youtube.
Good for 3 years!!!!
