How To Cut Half Inch Steel?

If you want to use it as a weight I would sell or trade it. You could sell it and then make weight from concrete. Hardened edges are hard to come by.

Frank, are you trying to say that you cant cut a 1/2in x 5in piece of hardened metal cleanly with a o/a torch or plasma, or that nobody can.

Powermax45 edge angle 003.jpgPlasma cut on 3/8 steel. I wouldn't call it terrible and I see no need to grind it. Cut with a Powermax45 from Hypertherm. 30 inches per minute cut speed.

Your absolutly correct. BUT, he wanted and needed, for his application, a nice........neat............straight.............cut. If he cut it with a torch or plasma cutter the cut would be terrible and he would be required to grind it. I repeat...............All other ways would fail to meet his needs..........................................................................................................................Frank

Oh, and here is some heavier stuff cut with same plasma...3/4" steel on the left, 1" on the right....with bevels cuts as well. The hardness of the steel has no effect on plasma cutting...I cut AR500 plate often.

Of course not everyone has a plasma.....however most that have one will do a 4 second cut like the OP was doing.....for free.

even my powermax30 did a passable job on a 1/2 x 5 snowplow cutting edge. Wasn't sure it would do it. Nice surprise that it could.

Anybody know what it would take to cut old pieces of oil pipe? We have about 20 pieces of 40' pipe that is about 10" outer diameter with walls that are between 1/2" and 3/4". I have thought of trying to use that as fence posts or to build deer blinds, but I didn't know how to cut it.

Dang Jim that is pretty, If you tried to "clean it up" you would just "mess it up" that is beautiful.

When I purchased a front end loader for my NH 1720 the brush guard supplied by the manufacturer would not clear the loader arms when in use...
My dealer did not install the brush guard due to this...
My remedy was to cut out a notch in the guard with my dad's portable metal cutting band saw...
It was a Milwaukee that was so old that the rubber bands that go around the drive wheels were dry rotted...
A new blade and bands repaired the unit and the results were great...
I have used that portable band saw on several other projects and it has performed flawlessly...
The only downside is you are limited to the throat clearance of 4"...
This is my go to tool for cutting metal if I can get around the throat clearance issue...
