Quick farm wagon build---with photos

For a while I've needed a smaller type "hay wagon" around here but didn't really want the size of an 8' x 16' wagon. Opportunity found me when I found an old wagon frame with four nearly new rib implement tires on it that I needed elsewhere. The wagon paid me to buy it.

So I stripped it down, scraped the loose paint and pressure washed it. Then primed and painted it the original red color.

The rails are PT 2" x 8" x 12' and I had some old 4" x 4" PT posts I cut to 7' long and bolted down.

The floor is 3/4" PT plywood that got ring-shank nailed down as did the trim boards. Packed the wheel bearings and new grease seals and will add tail lights and an SMV sign later.

Was an easy build and is perfect for my intended use and who knows, I might use as a parade wagon. You can build this in a long afternoon.

Nice job:thumbsup:

I have found a couple of old hay wagons for sale just have not had time to go look at them. I would like to have one for hay rides and to carry pumpkins out of the field.

Build just like I did but stretch to 16' long and 8' wide. Uses 4 sheets of 3/4" PT plywood and is a snap to build. If you ever use for hay, the plywood is fine and I have used similar wagons for 175-200 bales for years. As a wagon for riders, they can slip with hay on it so they have to be careful.

If you ever build one, find the 1/2" x 12" carriage bolts for the rails before you start since they can be hard to find in some locations. Best wagons are Deere and New Holland.

That's a nice job.

A friend gave me a 1930's "Peru" brand king pin wagon with spoke wheels made by Electric Wheel Co. that I hope to restore like yours.

But I need help on one point: you covered the jack stands to keep from getting paint on them, but you left your wife's grass exposed. My wife can spot a few specks of overspray before she turns off the highway; how do you get away with that?

Ahhh, grasshopper that is easy. Encourage her to buy a pair of shoes or more makeup first. She's going to do it anyway and you get a free pass. I have done this and it works every time.

Seriously, get a HVLP Harbor Freight $25 spray gun like I have frequently mentioned and almost no spray goes on the grass. Also, spray when the grass is a little taller and then mow beneath the paint line. A little paint may show but it grows out fast. I have done this for decades and it works. Tell her to chill out.

Plan "B" would be to wait for a super cheap Harbor Freight blue tarp sale and slide it under the gear. Search my old threads on rebuilding stuff and you can see I do it all the time.

Doing your trailer would be more historically significant than mine so maybe search the correct paint color--or real close to it--and see if you can find replacement decals. Pack the wheel bearings, maybe sandblast the wheels and you'll have a first class job. All those extras will just take a little longer but be very rewarding. maybe search old hay wagon photos with that gear and duplicate something.
