Good Day Ladies and Gents:

My neighbor has a log splitter made from an old square baler. I was at his place the other day when he was splitting fire wood. This thing was chewing through the wood in record time. Beats my little electric hydraulic unit all to ****.

The wood we use around here for home heating is spruce, pine and poplar. Nothing really hard or stringy.

Does anyone have any plans for building such a gizmo? I want to engineer mine with a few safety features, such as, covers for moving parts, a way to drop the wood into a trough so your hand is never near the ram or the knife. It will be a work in progress.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kind regards,

He broke it.

Doesn't look like it was strong enough for repeated pounding at the exact same part of the stroke(same gear tooth).

sounds like not if but when you end up in the ER, with an amputation,

It's been tried plenty of times before, they don't last long as a splitter, you just have to out last it... lol

Does he still run the sheer bolt on it?

Pretty wild but...I'll stick to my conventional splitter. That baler splitter is more dangerous than that car axle mounted cone splitter.
