I finally broke down an bought a MIG welder (Hobart Handler 180) so now I need some good sources for materials for a couple projects. I know about Heck Steel in Ida and ASAP Source in Ann Arbor ($$$$) for new materials. Any good places to get scrap at decent prices. I'm located in Monroe County and work in the Ann Arbor area.

I've been pickin' up scrap metal whenever I go to the dump on Saturday's. Sometimes there's a lot of scrap and other times none worth taking. You may want to post a "wanted scrap metal" ad on "craigslist" under the wanted or free areas.
Now I'm looking for a good welder so I can practice gluing metal together. Jon

Well it's kinda hard to give you an idea...they sell everything for 30 cents a pound and the inventory varies from day to day.Lotsa drops..some new steel..most a little rusty, but Rustoleum sticks better that way!! Open till 4:30 weekdays and noon Saturday.
I have been going there for two years and have never come away without something that'd work.Built dump trailers, dump trucks, three point equipment, log splitter,FEL....heck..a WHOLE TRACTOR!! They carry square/rectangle tube,C channel,I beam,pipe,DOM,round/square/hex rod, angle iron, sheets and plates..my favorite is the basket of flat stock drops..great for gussets and such. Here is a map and phone number..might want to call ahead if your need something special.. Yellow Page Search for C Henry Steel in Fort Wayne, Indiana Drop the wife AND daughter at the mall while you shop for steel??? Mustsa had a rich Uncle...LOL

Dropping them off beats having to go with them!!!
A smart man knows to quietly remove the checkbook and credit cards from their purses before making the drop. He is also counting on us supplying him with a source for scrap steel that is cheap enough to offset the money they spend at the mall. David from jax |

Another good place in Fort Wayne is Hoosier Metals just off Coliseum Blvd. by Tractor Supply. It's more of a scrap metal place than salvage steel like his brother's place (C Henry Steel). The thing I like about Hoosier is that I can haul a load of metal I don't want in there, get weighed, offload it and find something I need/want/like and toss it on my trailer before I weigh out and just collect on the difference, essentially buying the pieces I want for the same money per pound as I collect for what I dropped off. The Henrys are nice folks with whom to do business, too. I never leave there without them giving me a new magnet, pen, ruler or something.
