Well, we finally moved to the country, and now I'm looking at tractors. There is a 1989 John Deere "springer"? 1050 tractor for sale with 554 hours on it. It appears to be in good shape. His asking price is $7000. No implements, no loader, just the tractor. Sooo... is this a good price? (Private sale.)

First let me say I love the 1050, so temper what I say here with that knowledge.

The hours sure seem low. Start it up and let it run for an hour and see if the meter is working. It won't tell you that it's always worked, of course, but generally, once broken, meters don't get repaired years later.

If the condition seems to match the hours $7,000 seems like a good price for the 2WD version of the last year of the 1050 (the 1070 replaced it in 1990) that I'd get over there and buy it. If it's 4WD, I would RUN with cash in hand and buy it if it's nice.

For a less skewed view on this, you might want to check out http://www.machinerylink.com and see what they can tell you on values. Let us know what you do.

Thanks, for the link. Sorry, its only 2WD. I will do some more checking into it this week and let you know how it turns out.

Like I said, if the hours are right and the look of the tractor matches the hours and it looks well-maintained, I still think it's a darn good price on one. The 1050's are just about "bullet proof" so you'll be getting a great machine there. Good luck. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

That price seems to be about right. I bought a 1984 JD950 (about 5 hp less than the 1050) about 2 yrs ago for $8600. It does have MFWD, PS, and loader. It had 2000 hours. There was a 2 wd 1050 in the local paper recently and I seem to remember it being in the $7000-8000 range.

I just traded a 1989 JD950 with FEL, 472 hours on it. I got 7000 out of it and dealer told me up front he would be selling it for between 9000 - 9500. I should have sold it myself but just did not want the hassle.

Saw one at my Case-IH dealer: 1989 4WD, loader, backhoe and canopy for $15000.
