Default What would you buy for $3000

Ok, we got the $12500 question, the $15000, and the $20000 question, well here’s one for you. How about a $3000 question. Now I will start by saying that I can fix most things, need to brush hog, run a posthole digger, and I like gear drive. Now I know I am talking an old tractor. One with 2wd, and probably no power steering. What would you choose? What old tractors should I look at, and what should I run away from screaming? The land it will be used on is just under 5 acres, 1/2 lawn, 1/2 woods.

Easy... 49 Farmall Cub.

Not sure if it can handle all of your specs but it would sure look nice in the yard.

Plus, if you shop around, you can have that Cub with one or 2 attachments and about $1000-$1500 in change.
My father bought a '48 Cub brand new with three attachments and a hydraulic lift for around $850.
I'd like to have either a 70's Cub (not a LoBoy), or a late 30's John Deere "L".

Paul; Lthough I have little personal experience, I know many folks who swear by the various old Fords. Parts are fairly easy to get, I think they all came with three point hitches ( I'm sure there are those who can give you specifics), and I have seen them in your price range.
The Cub would be a neat choice. I have no use for one, but I imagine one of these years, one will follow me home.
Hope all is well with your daughter,
Will

Paul,

I have to concur with Will regarding an old Ford -- my vote would be for an 8N, nice mid-powered old tractor w/3pt and PTO. Some day (year) I'll have one as a restoration project.

Paul,

I think a Ford 8N or 2000 either one would be a good choice. I see the 8N's advertised all of the time for anywhere from 1800.00 to 2500.00 and sometimes that is with a RFM or Bushhog ( 2500.00) I have seen 2000's advertised for $3000.00

Paul, I would look for an Oliver 550. great tractor for what you want to do. I paid $2800 for one with a FEL. Used it for first 5 years that we lived here. But I needed something smaller and 4WD to plow the snow off of the ice rink. So welcome kubota! Attached is a photo of my old 550.

Paul,

I wholeheartedly agree with Von in the Oliver. They are great tractors that for one reason or another haven't taken off in price like the 8N's have around here. For practical purposes, I think an Oliver is a great way to go. Good luck with your search.

Well, if you like fixing a tractor that breaks a lot and is worth about $3,000, you might look for a 1999 John Deere 4300..... No, no, no........ I withdraw that suggestion....... It was just a wild poke in the dark to let those green-loving new Star Members know that I'm still alive, and orange.
