Interesting information about source of quality Stainless Steel - quote from person who attended a boating seminar. Now I wonder where the best quality steel comes from.

The instructor was discussing the inspection, possibility of failure and replacement of sailboat rigging:

"Worst of all, I learned that the quality of stainless steel manufactured in the USA and Europe has become very bad. The only good source today is Korea. Unfortunately, Chinese manufacturers have started shipping their products to Korea for repackaging and rebranding thus masquerading as the superior product. The only cure for that kind of problem is via meticulous certification and paper trails for every part as used in the aircraft industry. That could make materials and parts very very expensive."

There are makers of premium steel, both stainless and carbon, in the USA. We know how to make it. It's expensive. And in these tough times it's not the manufacturer of the steel that is to blame. It is the buyer of the steel. As we try harder to compete with other countries the buyers in the US are asking for the cheapest steel that they can get.
