As a pilot, I can say this is NOT true. The liability reform (?) passed by congress a few years back relieves the MANUFACTURER of an aircraft made more than 20 years ago from liability in SOME cases. It does not relieve them of negligence or willfull misconduct. It also doe snot releive them of responsibility for replacement parts put into this airplane which are less than 20 years old.
The OWNER/OPERATOR of an aircraft is ultimately responsible for determining its airworthiness and for its safe operation, regardless of its age. (This would be the airline, in your example, or an individual in the case of many of the smaller, privately owned general aviation aircraft.)
