I am considering the purchase of a Ford 3000, serial number C313353. I have to pull the 3pt hitch lever nearly all the way to get the lift to respond.
Is this a big or small problem and can anyone explain what is wrong? Also can anyone decipher the serial number for year etc.? A puff of blue smoke was seen on startup but cleared thereafter. The rebuilt engine shows 190 hours...
Is $5900 a fair price with a 5' cutter (rebuilt)?

Thanks.

emor, I don't know about their accuracy or completeness but [ur]http://www.tractortips.com[/url] shows the model 3000 to have been made from 1965 to 1975, but don't list the individual serial numbers to find the right year within that range.

As for the 3-point hitch, what kind of range of movement does it have? Perhaps an example is the best way I can explain why I ask: My Kubota B2710 had "1" to "8" positions shown at the lever, but if an implement, hooked up and sitting on the ground, with the lever all the way forward to the "1" position, was to be raised, nothing happened until you got the lever back to about the "4" position because the implement was not letting the lower links all the way down as close to the ground as they could go if no implement was attached. So, if you can control the 3-point through its full range of movement, I'd say no problem.

As for the puff of smoke on startup, I think that's common and to be expected with diesel engines.

And for price, John Miller III keeps up with that and I don't, but if it's really in good condition, I suspect it would bring that much in my area.

It is a 1971 model. The price seems a little high I would be thinking around $4k- $5k depending on condition and your area.

...The rebuilt engine shows 190 hours...

Is the engine rebuilt...? or does it have a "new" hour meter replaced "190 hours ago"... ? /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

Good question. The owner stated that it was rebuilt but I do not have a reliable way to verify. "They" disconnected the old cable and installed a new meter on the cowling.
Thanks for all the info. I am still uneasy about the level travel though, the ground was level and I had about 2 inches of final level travel to work with. This would be my first tractor so I am very skeptical.

Easy... ask to see all the parts receipts that were replaced, including all machine shop labor... also you can see new gasket material throughout, gasket cement, absolutely no oil leaks or wet spots... but...

rebuilt or not... price is out of range... I'd offer say ~~around $3k. to start and work your way up (max $4k... maybe)... if it's a plain jane cutter... you can buy a new unit for $500-600 w/warranty...

Is this a dealer sale or private sale? Normally a dealer will offer some minimum warranty... also if it was truly rebuilt... you'd have new clutch/throwout brg/trans. seals etc. (you wouldn't go through all the trouble of splitting the unit without doing some of these other things while it's apart...)

What area of the US are you located in?

What are you going to use this tractor for?

For $5900... you should be able to get a 2wd w/loader, 40-50 PTO hp... /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

All good points. I am in the Florida panhandle near Tallahassee.
I need a tractor to mantain about 12.5 acres of pasture and to work a small garden (less than 1/2 acre). Brush around the pasture perimeter also needs some attention (cut, piled and burned).
