Can someone please give pricing advice on a JD 850, 4wd,PS/8 spd/ 860 hrs, backhoe & front bucket, turf tires. Machine is advertised as in very good condition. Asking price is 13k. Is this to much for an older machine. I figured I would ask before I make an appt to see the machine. thanks

Well, I just looked at a '98 Deere 4300 w/ Sync Shift (9F/3R), MWFD, FEL and industrials..no Backhoe. The machine had just over 400 hours and the price was just over $14K.

How's that for a comparison?

I don't know how that deal stacks up Roy, but if you get it I'll be mighty envious. I looked at 4300s when I got my 790 but was drawn to the value of the 790 (read lower price). If I had gotten a 4300 it would have been the sync-shift. Now I think I'd look towards a power-reverser. Keep us posted on your shopping /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

NH is a great machine. For a used JD at 14K I would be looking at a 955 in great shape or a 4300.
You can buy new for not too much more so look at all your alternatives.
Good luck!

$13K is too high, but keep in mind that the 850 is a real good (but dated) tractor, and with a FEL and a Hoe, it still has good value. Condition is very important. If it is in great shape and you are satisfied with the simple design of the tractor, make him an offer that you are comfortable with.

"but if you get it I'll be mighty envious."

Didn't go for 4300.
The tractor is in southern VA and would have cost $600 to ship it (although, since I turned the deal down, I confirmed access to a trailer). Would have been a 6 hour drive just to see it. Also, the fixed ROPS was just a little too tall to fit through the garage door. That wouldn't have been a show stopper though.

Wifey said we've got to look around locally (PA, MD, DE) and we want more of a down payment. Also, we never got an answer from the seller on warranty (it was a dealer, but I'm not sure if it was a Deere dealer.

Not a big deal, passing on this one. I'm really more in the looking stage now anyway. And, there's at least 4 or 5 Deere dealers in a 60 mile radius.

My 670 is a nice machine, but no live PTO. I am looking for live or independent PTO. A few more HP would be nice too. We've only got three acres, so the 4300 would be a little bit overkill....but I could live with that.

Frankly, the 790 is still my favorite. I'd rather have the independent PTO, but I could live with the dual stage clutch. And, of course, for a few thousand more then the 4300 price, I could have a new 790. No interest in a Hydro tranny, BTW.

If anyone else is interested in that 4300, do a search for 4300's on Machinefinder.com.

I bought a JD950 (bigger brother to the 850) 3 years ago for $8600. It has FEL, MFWD, PS, 2000 hours. Good condition. No backhoe. There is a 1050 on ebay for just under $11K, no backhoe. Not sure how much the backhoe should add in price.
850s, 950s, and 1050s show up on ebay some times. You might search for these under "completed items" to see what some recently sold for (or didn't sell for as the case may be).

Thanks to all. I really would like to get a NEW machine. I am used to running the big stuff & just retired from that after 33 yrs of demolishing bldgs.
I need to start considering spending the extra money & buying new... maybe up to 30 hp.
All suggestions are truly appreciated. I have 6 acres & want to move an old 200' stone wall from one end of the property to another , general digging & snow removal. No mowing.

Found the time to look on machinefinder.com for you

found 6 850's, 2 had mfwd and loaders:

1984 1800hours $8900 (canopy)
1983 Broken meter $6000

these are for sale from dealers

judging from those I would agree with Davestractor's reply.

one of the 2wd 850s popped up at 3600hours so you would have a lot of life still left at 860hrs
