I'm thinking of getting a ford 8000 that I've seen for sale. Anyone have any pro's or cons they would like to share?

I beleive ther were made from 65 - 86 right?

Anything to look for?

Approx price?

thanks. I'm going to look at it tonight.. If I can find the owner I'm gonna ask to start it up, etc.. see the pto spin, and the lift go up and down...

if it has the seloctomatic transmission, I would say, stay away from it. I just got rid of a FOrd 5000 w/this tranny. Look up the hours just to tear it down, never mind finding used parts that may or may not work. By Ford's own admission, they quite making replacement parts for this one type tranny years and years ago. If it has standard, then I would look further into it.

Hey Soundguy,

Very good tractors. First of Ford's foray into the larger size ones. About the only complaint I've heard on them is the power steering is under powered for some. If you get make sure and run conditioner in the water to keep it from getting the cavatation erosion problems.

Ok, went to look at it tonight and this is what I saw.

Where it has been parked for two weeks, there is only a very small amount of oil.. less than a teaspoon. Starts up on first crank.. sounds good too.

I drove it around their pasture, and at first the shifter linkage was stiff, but after a shift or two seemed fine.

The tranny was not selectomatic , at least not the selectomatics I've ever seen.

Instead there was a high neutral low range selector on the dash, and then the 1-4 / 5/8 gear selector ( r r2 ).

Also said it had dual power.. and I believe that refereed to the foot buttons in the operator platform.

Power steering was ok... not as responsive as my 1920.. but then again.. better than my 8N.

3pt lift worked but was slower than I expected. Rubber is new. Some oxidation on rear rims from cacl I presume.. but rims are at least servacible. No obvious signs of jurryrigging... welds or other patch style repairs. Little to no body rust.. only one area of fibreglass damage to left fender.... seat cushion shot Breaks excelent, both sides.

Only negative thing I noticed was the pto. The pto would run even when the pto lever was on the stop mark... not sure if this is linkage or something stuck .. but in any case.. i would rather have the pto stuck on, than not work at all. Owner said pto worked ok 2 weeks ago.

Ok.. looking for opinions now

thanks guys.

Oh yeah, sn looked like c248885

...not familar enough with tractor to make judgement... but I'd talk to a NH ag mechanic on this one, possibly pay him to give this unit a once over if you are that serious about purchase, but this PTO clutch will be internal bellhousing... and would require a tractor split that could add $$$ rather quickly after your initial purchase...

Hi Frank...

Good, bad, or indifferent... That's exactly as I pulled it from the data base... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Probably a data mistake, or maybe "non-US" units after '73... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Regarding the PTO spinning all the time; with the PTO lever or switch disengaged, try putting your (gloved) hand on the shaft to provide some resistance. My pto has a little friction from the tranny and will spin when disengaged, but you can stop it with your hand - so an implement hooked up will certainly not spin when disengaged.

Just a thought.
