1988 Massey 240
Well after nearly 20 years and 1700 hours I want a new tractor with a cab and A/C. Let me clarify, I want one, I dont really need one! I have owned a 1988 Massey 240 with a 232 loader for almost 20 years and its been perfect not any problems other than oil changes and 2 steering cylinders. I have 3 acres that I mow weekly with the Massey and a 72" Land Pride finish mower (I've worn out 2 Bush Hog finish mowers before the Land Pride) I also own 60 acres 100 miles from my home that I trailer to 6 to 12 times a year. The 60 acres has a gully that is tough to cross and hard to work with the 240 because it lacks 4wd. I also mow about half of the 60 acres with a nearly new Bush Hog 286 with the chain option (almost to heavy for the 240 due to the 110hp gear box and 1/4" plate) great mower though

I think I have decided to buy a John Deere 5083E with a 553 loader because of all the great reviews but I need some questions answered first. So here we go:

* Can I haul the 5083/Loader/mower on I my present 6'-10" x 18' heavy duty trailer (8 hole wheels) and 1 ton Dodge dually 4wd) the Massey hauls great but the mower hangs off ?

* Can i use the Bush Hog 286 72" and the Land Pride 72" finish mower on the new 5083?

* What can I expect to get trade in $$ on the 240 its in great condition, 2000 hrs with good paint always kept inside barn.

* What should I expect to pay for the 5083 with the 553 loader in the North Texas area, I dont mind driving a few hundred miles for a good deal. I see other posts that say $45k with the loader is about right.

*Can someone recommend a dealer within a 100 mile radius of DFW that will give me fair trade in and order the 5083/553 at a good price, I dont mind waiting for a month or two for it to come in for the right price.

I know this is a long first post but I need help! If you think this is the wrong tractor give me some suggestions my e-mail is ggreig7864@aol.com

Welcome Harllley!

The 5083E is a very nice tractor, but if you haven't heard, the 2012 models are slightly more expensive because of some nice, very worth upgrades. If your getting a model off the lot, be sure it's a 2012.

What is the weight capacity of the trailer? The truck is definitely HD enough, but you would want a 10k+ capacity trailer minimum.

You could use either of those mowers behind the 5083, but they wouldn't cover the wheel base of the tractor. If you have to mow close to objects, I would get an 84". Are you planning on mowing your lawn with this tractor? I hear finish mower, you may be better suited getting a little riding mower and not damaging the grass as much.

You may also take a look at a 5085M, they are the deluxe machines and have a lot of really nice features on them over the 5083E's. Either way you go, they are really nice tractors.

Good luck!

I'd compare prices on the 563 loader to the 553.

I would guess that tractor/mower combination to be at least 23ft.long;don't think a 18ft.trailer is going to work.

I'm on the verge of buying a 5083e also. I found a 2011 5083 with loader and 39 hours for $41000.00 in Muskogee at hogans equipment. I have priced a new 012 with loader -air seat and industrial tires for around $45000.00. I will have to order it and it takes 45 to 60 days to get it. I'm swinging towards the new one because of the upgrades to the 2012. New holland power star has some really cool features like E-hitch, 25 mph road gear, front fenders. And self leveling loader but there is none available for several months. Approx 46000.00

Any comments which is the better tractor. I still
Think the John Deere --?

i dont know where you are located but the price you are quoted on the NH power star is a little high....and as far as a few months to get one, we have 3 that should arrive any moment and 4 more on the way within a couple weeks...

Cab is way nicer, same as the M series. I don't recall all the specifics though they was a couple more.

I'd compare prices on the 563 loader to the 553.

I'd back up that comment... Have a good look at the specs for the 563.. much better than the 553 and maybe not that much more expensive! I've just placed an order for the 2012 5083E with 563 self levelling loader and 4 in 1 bucket. Very nice combination..

I did a lot of research on the 2012 JD5083E and the NH Powerstar T4.75.. Both really good tractors but I decided on the JD because (at least here in Australia) the NH loader options for their Powerstar did not include a loader with near the capability of the JD563 loader. Bigger NH loaders were physically no good for the Powerstar (geometry and axel loadings!) If you didn't need a loader either tractor would do a great job.
