Default Best 4wd Tractor fro 150 acres??

Hi Guys.. I am on the lookout for a 4WD tractor fro our 150 acres that we have recently purchased.. I am Eddy Albert ( from Green\ Acres Fame) and as such .. haven't got a clue, But I am sure you will ( hopefully ) Bombard me with great advise.. Lord knows I could use it!! ( ask my wife )
The property is undulating with 11 paddocks.. 9 dams and a creek running through one side... We ( currentlyt ) have 41 heard of cattle ( for beef) and as we bought those from the previous owners.. I could use some advise there as well.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

From what I've seen in your country equipment is not always the same as what we have here and you do do crops differently to a degree.

Most of your area animals graze through the year. The equipment needs would be small depending on how much needs to be done.

    Hi,

For 150 acres I would be looking at a tractor in the 55 - 65 hp range and if you can afford it, 4WD. Anything smaller than that will severely limit you to what you can do.

Each brand has it's good and bad points and many of us here are "colour blind" to other brands (loyalty ?).

Spend a bit of time looking and researching your needs and your location/area. There are lots of good deals around, they just need to be looked for.

Don't be in too much of a hurry or you will end up with a real money pit or something you really don't need.

Others will chime in and offer their opinions and advice.

Good luck and I hope you manage to get yourself a good buy.

    Cheers

    Hi Bob

Actually G'day as I'm from Sydney too. I just bought a 60 HP Kioti for a farm size of 100 acres New Kioti RX6010C Cab Tractor

I decided on 60 HP as being about right for our 100 acres based on reading this forum and what we needed to do - lots of slashing in summer. 4WD as some places can be a bit slippery when wet, though not too steep. Cabin as it gets hot in the Central West where our farm is.

Make up a list of what you want to do. Also as you said your "Green Acres" so best to buy new and not get 2nd hand. That's why I bought new as I don't much about repairing tractors. Work out your budget too, how much can you afford.

We also have cattle agisted on our place. For help with the cattle find out what breed they are and approach the society that specialises in that breed. E.g. for Galloways www.galloway.asn.au or if Red Angus www.redangus.org.au etc... Basically Google for a specialist organisation for that breed. Also the DPI has info on their web pages.

No such thing as Best or Perfect Tractor.

I'm using a 45 and 38 HP kubota on 400 acres. Not planting crops, but mowing, logging and dirt/gravel work. You don't need a huge tractor, unless you want one.

80 acres here, with 2 lakes, 1/3 pasture 1/2 crop land, then about 10 acres for house, sheds, lakes, dirt roads.

60 HP for me is a tad to big. for "maintenance work" post hole digging, for fence lines, grading roads, rotatory cutter (bush hog) pasture, dealing with snow drifts. and 40HP would do me better.

on other hand. at moment i do have a 60 HP ford/new holland 555TLB, and it does make quicker work for moving dirt, putting in culverts, and like. but it is just to big at least to me. for backing down pond edges, getting around fence lines to cut down tall weeds. do not get me wrong 60 HP will do it all.

on other hand, the HP and weight is up there to handle "round bails" and if i need to, i could quickly dig a 8 to 10 feet depth hole. put dead cow in. and then refill packing dirt fairly quickly. ((warning read up on regulations for burying dead animals)) no many folks can do it any more due to how close other houses and streams and wells there are.

    ================
you will be wanting AG / R1 tires. all other tires and being on so much acreage, and needing to get through mud. will be ugly, R1s will help you a lot with traction.

buying that many cattle, and not knowing much for keeping care of them. *cringes* you are on for a long roller coster ride.

Thanks everyone.. still confused.. but slowly understanding that around 50 to 75 hp is where I should be.. 4WD.. and if I can afford it , an Aircon cab.. ( it gets very hot and very wet in Krambach throughout the seasons!).. The cattle are still alive !! that's almost a year and they seem to eat grass and leave **** everywhere.. but hey , I have kids as well and they aren't any better!

Does anyone have any knowledge on the Agrison Range.. they seem almost too cheap .. and that always scares me !

    Cheers

Welcome...never heard of Agrison, so looked it up. Interesting.

Yep, raising cattle is a challenge...what kind of fences do you have...any electric??
If you haven't lost any cattle yet, you will. It happens even under the best of management.

Let's get back to basics - what work do you want to do with the tractor? E.G Mainly general duties like fencing, grading & maybe some slashing -or- Primarily cultivation ( & if so how many acres ) ?? - this with then govern the HP requirement.

As for Chinese tractors, in Australia they're still a bit like the Chinese vehicles - plenty of names around but few actually sold/used & relatively unproven in our demanding market in c. 50hp+ .
I'd rather be in investing my hard $'s in Korean ( Daedong/Kioti) or a "known" brand either new or secondhand............

We have 150 acres in sloping hilly country up on the Mid North Coast of NSW.. currently has 55 head of cattle roaming n eating the grass , but i want to prepare and grow 25 acres down on the flat part.. ( not withstanding wanting to clear around 35 to 40 acres up on one reasonably steep hill that is totally overgrown....) and general farm duties..
I hope to get a backhoe attachment as I need to clean and expand several of the dams that are quite overgrown ..
having said all that , I am a city slicker who is taking a BIG plunge into the unknown!

Cheers and thanks for all your help
