Same pasture maintance,usually run cows on these pastures so they are not typically that thick but I have a bottum that I have run the batwing in 2'/3' mowing water grass/thistles/etc. in it but I also try and spray
first and kill the weeds before mow it.I try and alternate spraying each pastures cant afford to spray everything

Attached are a couple pics of what I encounter and use to base whether or not the PTO HP would be adequate for the cutters mentioned. I have often wondered what a 10' or 12' or even 15' unit would do in these conditions with the 56 PTO HP I have available. I do a lot of woods road maintenance and have about decided the 6' is probably the best option for the all purpose situations I encounter.
Are you sure the 485 can fit on the 5065e? According to JD's website it can only go up to the 4x20 series. I think you need an aftermarket backhoe as I don't believe Deere makes a BH to fit the 5065e.
That is a really big trench. I would offer the same advice as mentioned.
As far as the 485 with the 5060 JD dealer said it could, and I found another review that indicated it could. JD site is not very user friendly.
I really appreciate all the input on the trench. Taking the approach that I will use the backhoe anyway, because of garden work I like to do. If it does not do the job or the soil is too hard/slow...I will then just probably contract it out. Afetr really thinkng hard about this, I'm going to go with the 10ft JD cutter for 6K. It is rated for a 46 hp PTO, so I think it will work better. Would love to have the bigger cutter/but at some point need to have a cut off on tractor size.

I don't want to beat it into you, but my only point is that you could get a USED dedicated backhoe for the SAME or LESS than what you could get the backhoe for the back of the tractor. It will dig deeper, be more powerful and do it faster. If you want to keep it for your gardening it won't be any physically larger than the 5065e but will have the added benefit of being able to use both machines.

In comparing the 15' cutter behind the M5040 vs the M7040, what level of efficiency or rating would you give the two? I am impressed that the M5040 would turn the 15' cutter in grass that thick and tall. My JD5303 has nine forward speeds. I typically operate in "B" range and 2nd gear. Believe this is around 4 mph, but not sure. If the field is smooth and the grass not too thick I can run in "B" range and 3rd gear. Not certain, but I believe the ground speed bumps up to around 6 mph to 7 mph. The cut quaility does go down some at the higher speed.

fishmak are you looking at 4WD or are you open to 2WD? My wife picked up a new 2011 JD 5065M 2WD with a cab for $32K, it was actually built in Nov. 2011. There's probably some still around, our dealer has sold about 15 of them. Her's was brought in from one of their other dealerships in VA. So far she really likes it. She drove the 5083E and didn't really care for it. She said it didn't have the right feel and she knows her equipment. The M series just felt right, she also looked at a Kubota M7040 but she didn't like the ride quality, the JD weighs about 1500-2000lbs. more. So far that 5 cyl. 3.0L engine seems to be very fuel efficient. Nebraska Tractor tests puts it right at 57 hp at the PTO.

I havent pulled the 15footer with the 7040 yet,the shredder is at lease place. I will say not going to go any worse than this,with the 5040,it got a work out.I could have pulled it faster but wonted to take it easy on tractor and get a good cut. 2nd low kept the tractor at full rpm's without bogging it down any,the 7040 should run it just alittle better,but then again thats running a/c and radio
