Plowing with 5083e
I've been researching the 5083e and can't find any info on plowing with it. I have 60 acres and an 8' jd offset and want to get a 12-14' disc plow. My 1973 100 hp 4230 can pull them fine so I figured an 83 hp with four wheel drive could do what a forty year old 2wd 100 hp tractor could do. Am I off base here?

Re: Plowing with 5083e
A 4230 is alot more tractor than a 5083E, i wouldn't expect it to pull a disk as well with the smaller tractor. The 4230 has about 50% more power than the 5083E so not a fair comparison.
You should be able to pull the discs you mention with the 5083e but pulling it fast enough in all conditions i am not so sure about (thinking about the offset disc). The 12 to 14' disc harrow would be an easier pull and either tractor would handle this well.
i have been to Ballinger a few times going to Mueller, nice area by the way.Last edited by jenkinsph; 01-13-2013 at 01:16 PM.

Re: Plowing with 5083e
I used to pull a 14 ft Kewanee disc with a 1085 Massey. TractorData.com shows the 1085 had a four cylinder Perkins diesel having 82 PTO hp and 69 drawbar hp. With duals it pulled the 14ft disc very easily. I would think that your 5083e would handle a 14ft easily. Don't know about the offset disc. I haven't had any experience with them. I should probably add that fields were mostly flat with very little slope.

Re: Plowing with 5083e
The 4230 is in a much bigger and better tractor . Dont expect anywhere near the same performance from the little 5083.
5083- 65 PTO hp ......85 engine hp
4230-100 PTO hp......120 odd engine hp

Re: Plowing with 5083e
The 4230 is more tractor...
Wheel base and weight gets the power to the ground...
The 4230 has a 104 inch wheel base and weighs 8,100 to 14,150# @ 100 hp @ the PTO according to tractor data.com...
The 5083 has a 85.8" wheel base and 7,200# @ 65 PTO hp according to tractor data.com...
We have a two 12' tandem disc that are not offset and pull them with a 180 and D17 Allis Chalmers...
That offset will pull harder but our Allis's can handle the 12' disc...
The 5083 will pull that disc but not as fast as the 4230...
That 4230 is a lot of tractor...

Re: Plowing with 5083e
I agree with the above posts. You are comparing a row crop tractor to a utility tractor so some big differences, if we where talking similar chassis/weight tractors than yes 4wd makes a lot of difference in what you can get away with for less hp. Just gotta be able to get that power to the ground w/ out slippage. I would look to the 6000 series chassis, if even in just the 80 or so pto hpo range and mfwd it will be very comparable in its capabilities.

Re: Plowing with 5083e
My 6430 Premium / 6715 have trouble pulling my 673 Tandem Disk thats almost 15' total width. It has trouble pulling only when its really wet. When its dry its alright, but prefer to have a little bit more power. 15 HP more or so would be better...
