Tractor
International 140; John Deere 4120 4wd, 400x loader
I have a chance to buy a, one owner, 2007 JD 4120 with JD 400x loader, w/ 105 hours, for $24000. Used to plow small garden. Tractor is in excellent condition.

However, I can purchase a brand new JD 4120 with same loader for $28500 plus sales tax from dealer. This would have 3 year warranty.

Thoughts?

Many thanks.

Wow! Firstly, welcome to TBN.

Secondly, and I'm not telling you anything you don't already know, 105 hours could be the proverbial 'little old lady who only drove it to church on Sunday'. I'd check the 07s owner manual for evidence of any servicing, maybe a side call to the dealer/service dept. to check their records. Some rigs have a first servicing @ 50 hours while others are @ 100 or 200 hours.

I like the savings of $4500... that can be spent on needed implements.

I agree with Wagtail...plus add in the $2000 in sales tax savings. $6500 is considerable savings.

On the other hand, it's nice to have the new machine with warranty, plus you can get 0% financing on a new one. If you are financing, I would go new because the $6500 will shrink considerably while paying interest. Paying cash, I would probably go used.

I'd buy the used one and do the 100 hour service.

I bought a 2006 4120 with loader and 4 wd and 660 hrs for 23-24k. I got a call from a dealer who new I was looking for a 4020 series deere. I had priced new 4120 and 4320s, comparable Kubotas, comparable 35 series Mahindra, and some others.
Before I made the purchase I tried to work with a dealer who had a new 4320 on the lot but I looked at interest rates and could not justify buying the new one. Although there is the warranty to consider. Mine is PST and I did not see any difference between used and new that was noticable. I have the 400X loader not the 400CX.

I would buy the used one especially with those hours which is inteed very rare to find.

Hope this helps you.

Thank you all for your welcoming words and your replies to my post.

I bought the 2007 tractor for a bit less than the asking price. Drove it home today. The daughter and mother took pictures as we drove out the driveway and down the road. My wife followed in the car. Our house and the tractor's former home are less than a mile apart.
Now to figure out what additional implements to get, starting with a rotary cutter.............D

I think you will be happy with your choice. Plus any scratch you find was made by the former owner. At least that's my story with my tractor.

I'll bet you noticed a lot more on the drive home than you do in a car/truck. I do when I "road" mine.
