Need some advice. A guy has a 1973 ford 2000 diesel he wants to trade me. The tractor appears to be in good condition. It has between 7500-8000 hrs on it. He says he has owned it since 1999 and the motor had been rebuilt at some point. It does not have a live pto. He also said it doesn't have glow plugs so when its below 70 degrees he has always started it with a shot of ether. He did say it doesn't smoke alot but when bush hogging hills it smokes more than normal. It comes with a 5ft bush hog of unknown brand, 2 bottom plow, boom pole, and a 6ft scraper blade. Is this tractor with this many hrs worth getting in the $3500 range or should I walk away and find something with less hrs. By the way no proof on the rebuild.

the ether part scares me.

a rebuilt 3 cyl should start under 70 with no thermal aid. might take a few rvs.. but it should start. had you said 40 to 30.. yeah.. hard starting.

that sounds like a basic 4spd or the 6spd.. might have no PS either.

3500$ is a nice price for even a non live pto machine.

check it out. check the steering.. see how it starts cold.

if the rest of the machine is great and has a new clutch.. you could afford some engine work if it needed rings, etc. smoking might mean valve guides..e tc. so head work.

at 8k hours.. I bet it's seen 2 clutches.. or is now wanting it's 2nd clutch..

condition, condition, condition... that's what counts. price is low for a 3cyl with goodies. all depends on how badly adicted that machine is to starter fluid... and how worn out the rest of it is..

as a side note. users: Rickb, ultradog and whodat have plenty more exp on these 'new' machines than I do. :)

this one got round axles?

I really would keep looking personally but I am not a fan of OLD small Ford diesels. While the price sounds low the parts for the engine are not cheap should it ever need something like the injector pump. It is just me but I would want at least a 5 speed with a double clutch. In those years a 3000 gas or diesel with live PTO can make an awesome tractor.

The ether part scares me too. It has aftermarket power steering.

Guy says this about the Deere. The bad on it is below.

The head lights are not working. It's the plug where if u need to take the hood off u would unplug it there And has a small leak at the front where the stering Knuckle is Only time it leaks any is if your working it real hard in 4 wheel drive. Its really no big deal. Front axle has a dip stick and I have never had to put any oil in it.

No smoke no blow by no pto or lift problems or leaks.

What does it matter about the axles?

That ford looks like it's been used, but not abused if it has that many hours, and looks the way it does (solid/sound).
