I'm looking to upgrade from my ol'reliable 1010
to something more modern. have found an 870 with fel
and has about 1000 hours on it. also they have a 4400
with fel and a cab but has 2000 hrs on it. I will probably
keep my jd 503 mower. will both of these machines run
this mower? I'm kind of interested in the one with
a cab but dont know if they are just too hot in the summer
and maybe just in the way. Is 2000 hours on a newer
machine too many hrs? I have always liked my 1010 because
it is heavy and I feel secure on it are the smaller jd's
just as stable?

thanks for any advise. Pharmer

Pharmer you will probably get more response to your question if you post them in the John Deere forum.

You are definitly changing tractors. The 870 is a good old style compact not much different then what you were running. The 4400 is a little more enclosed. Both tractors are powered by Yanmar. I wouldn't worry so much as to the hours but I would like to know the way they were run and treated.

Get the 870! Great machines. 970 new in 1991 and no problems. I just traded in my 4300 for a new 990 and like it 10x as much. 4400 is bigger though. 870 has 30 engine HP and 27 PTO. Same as the old 790s.
