I have recently purchased 80 acres of timber and CRP and am in need of a tractor to take care of the place. I have a zd28 and rtv which I use around the house and the rtv mainly for hunting. I have prices for a 2004 brand new 5320 with FEL and a new Kubota M7040 with FEL. The kubota is 3K less. Kubota has hydro shuttle and Deere power reverser. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Drive both of them around. See which one is more comfortable for you. Which dealer do you like better? Which dealer inspires more confidence? Talk to some friends in the area to see what they think about the dealers.

If you like the Deere more... do you like it $3000 more? Or would the Kubota suffice. Also see what extras the Kubota may have that the Deere does not.

Both are good machines. I went with the Kubota M Series over the JD because I felt I got more bang for the buck and it was cheaper.

The Deere 5320 is turbocharged. The Kubota M7040 is not. Naturally aspirated motors (from any manufacturer) loose approximately 3% of their sea level rated HP per 1000' of elevation. At 6000', that's an 18% loss. Some believe turbos add unnecessary cost, complexity, and maintenance. At altitude, I think they are a requirement.

if you really want a turbo, the next model up - M8040 has a wastegate turbo and will still be cheaper than the Deere.

No doubt at my altitude of 7500' I'd go for the new M8540 over the M7040 just to get the turbo and keep the power I'm paying for up here in the thin air of Colorado.

To be fare, the M8540 is rated as a 75 PTO HP tractor. In the Deere line, that would be either the slightly older 5520 or the current 5525. Also note that the Deere 5420 is a naturally aspirated 65 PTO HP while the newer 5425 is a turbocharged 65 PTO HP.
