What is comparable to a Kubota 3400?

If you don't care about HST then you have more options. I like the 790 and the 990 also. The latter and the L4400 are about the best deals you can get on a new machine today if you don't want HST.

If we don't want the bigger HP and size of the L4400 or the 990 then I think that the L3400 and 790 are good options. I'd prefer the L3400 given the extra HP and the availability of HST.

I don't personally think that the JD 3403 is a good tractor for the money. I think they were trying to compete with the L3400 but it just didn't seem priced right at least a couple of months ago.

Definately consider the L3130 and L3430 with the 753 loader. Really nice tractors for the money also with the availability of GST and HST.

Ill toss in the blue version (cause thats what i drive)

i looked at that size when looking for mine. but the options i wanted only came on the "grand L" ie xx30 and then it included a bunch of crap i didnt want.

I found the TC series and found something that had just the features i wanted with what i felt was an overall better machine. (but cost slightly more)

while a bit smaller, you might check out the TC30 (bare bones version) much like the buta xx00 series.

All advice here is good. If I was wanting a basic tractor in the 40 HP range the JD 990 and Kubota L4400 would be on my short list. If you want to stick with a 30 to 35 HP unit then the L3400 along with the NH TC30 would get my attention. You should be able to get a TC 30 with FEL for around 15K. Personally, I would step up to a TC 35 or TC40. More tractor and lift capacity than the TC30 or TC29/33/34. My NH 1720 is rated at 28 HP and workes great for me. I didn't want hydrostat and my unit is synchronized shuttle shift. Really great unit with only 290 hours now.
