In general, one can only guess it's for sales.
Related, many (most?) tractor models are numbered, and the numbers are at some level meaningful. For instance, the model number contains the horsepower designation on some tractors. So, when the horsepower changes, they need/want to change the model number to go with it.
Contrast this with cars, where the model name (mustang, tahoe, etc), can remain the same, yet the mechanical side of things changes radically.
Trucks are somewhere in between.
A branded tractor name ("BX" comes to mind) will always have meaning to those who care. If Kubota created a "BX7800", people who knew BXs would be confused - how can they build a 78 horsepower sub-compact (though that would be cool...)
