Need as much information as possible on a IH 255 compact tractor. Local auction has 1 and I may be interested in it. What H.P.? Engine? Power steering? 2 or 4 wd? Advantages and Disadvantages?
Any info. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. JRF

I have a Case/ IH 244............One size smaller than the 255..........I've run it 5 years with no problems.......540/1000 pto (2 stage clutch) Live hyd, no p. steering, mine is 2wd but they were made in 4x4 models also. I run a 5' brush hog as well as a 6' rear mount finish mower with no problems power wise. I also use a 6' box blade occaisionally with good results. I just got a good deal on a NH TC40 or I wouldn't be selling my 244. All in all a decent little tractor and a friend bought a used 255 based on my good luck with my 244. His has alot of hours but still performs well..........Tom

I bought one in new 88, a 4x4, gear transmission, power steering, with loader. I paid dearly, almost 14,000 (where was the internet when I needed it?)
It was pretty reliable, I sold it last year for 8000. with 650 hours on it. I took pretty good care of it (see pictures) It was sad to see it hauled off by a stranger, but the L4610 Kubota eased the pain somewhat (ha, I danced with joy is more like it)
The Case is fine if you need a small tractor.
It is very economical to run, but heaven help you if you need to buy specialty parts (VERY expensive)
The transmission was the weak point on mine.

I considered one that was being auctioned off,I did some research and found that parts for it were getting hard to find.
I thought the build seemed a little light and the price it went for 10K was too high considering those things and the condition.
Ended up buying a new Kioti to compliment my IH 184 and it has been a great machine.
People just seem to be asking way too much for used compacts so a new machine for a little more was the way to go for me........Mike

I noticed that the local JD dealers are running specials on the 4010 with hydrostatic transmission for just over 9K. Kind of makes you think about spending too much on questionable used tractor. And the parts are easier to get too.

The 254/255's were built for IH/CIH by Mitsubishi ( both are great tractors in my opinion) your 255 has a Mitsubishi K3E engine. The first place to check is generally a Case IH parts dealer but they may tell you that those parts are unavailable/discontinued,etc.... if you can not find them from the dealer, contact a Mitsubishi parts supplier like Len Scheaffer http://www.japanesetractorparts.com/index.htm , he will undoubtedly be able to get it for you and at a reasonable price. In fact, Len got me a connecting rod for a very similar K3F engine a couple of years ago and I had it within a few days.
