Hi

I wonder if anyone can help me with a starting problem on my old International 276.

I came to start it the other day and it turned over fine, good amount of white smoke out of the exhaust (which is usual for her, soon eases once started) but I was a bit keen turning the key back before she'd fully caught and so it stopped. Attempting to then turn it over was met with a lot of turning, very little smoke and no firing.

I serviced her a couple of months back (oil & fuel filter changed, air filter cleaned) and she's had no problem starting since then (about 10 hours of use).

The fact there was little smoke suggests a fuel problem so I had the lift pump off and cleaned the filter in that (which was fairly clogged) and started the usual fuel line diagnostics of checking fuel at the various connectors whilst pumping the lift pump. What we found was that fuel is getting to the filter, through to the injector pump (right name? I'm a newbie at this mechanics lark :D) but not getting through to the injectors. We had the lines off the pump to the injectors and blew them through with compressed air so they're not blocked. If you look at the attached picture I've put ticks where we know there's fuel getting through ok, and crosses where there isn't...

Through the inspection plate we confirmed the pump is being driven - but nothing come through at the injectors. So that suggests a problem at the back end of the pump. Before I go removing the end plate and trying to figure out what's going on in there (if anything) I thought I'd see if any one has any thoughts/suggestions/advice?

Many thanks
Daz

Sounds like you have air in the system. You may not be able to get fuel to the injectors by using the hand pump on the lift pump. Bleed the system out to the injector pump with the lift pump then bleed the lines to the injectors by cranking the engine.

Follow the bleeding as best you can. IF that does not work you may be headed for a rebuilt on the injector pump, or at least having an injection shop check on the pump for you. DO NOT START TEARING THE PUMP APART YOURSELF!!! These are very complicated pieces. For the most part dealers do not even work on them any more, they are sent out. Not saying this is what you have for sure, but older pumps like that one can have rubber pieces come loose in side and block fuel flow and keep things from working at all.

i second that. They are more complicated than they seem. You need to have a shop look at it.

Don't know how old this question is (new to this kinda thing and nearty to old)
but my 276 has just done exactly the same thing! what was the outcome???

I have been having this same problem, I suspected for a while that the shaft onto which the fuel cut off lever is attached is the problem. I think that the nipple on the base of the shaft is worn. Everything else is checked and double checked. Try moving the fuel cut off and the accelerator slowly, they may realign. This can then run fine for a long time. On verge of stripping down the pump, nothing ventured nothing gained, can always reassemble to send away for repair.

I have the IH service manual that deals with DPA pump strip and reassembly, drop me a PM for more details with your e mail address on it ???

Wow, forgot all about this...

In our case apparently there was something (float values or something?) that had gotten themselves stuck closed in the injector. As luck would have it there is a specialist just down the road that our dealer directed us to, so he replaced the faulty parts, did a full service and recalibration. Cost me about £100 and she's back running, although I think he may have set the idle too low as with no throttle she sounds like she'll stop any second, so I just keep a little bit on and there's no issue.

Two years down the line though and she's getting harder to start (esp. when its cold outside), you can tell shes not quite firing on all cylinders to start with, and the colder it is the longer it takes for all to start running. At current UK temps it only takes about 10seconds to settle down, but during our really cold spells it could take minutes, and with copious amounts of black smoke thrown in (but not when it's warmer). Any thoughts as to what that might be?!

Cheers

I have had the lid off the injector pump, very fine paste like sludge inside. Given it a wipe up, will get her pulled home and then play in some more detail.... I think that I need to take the side cover off next to see how far the sludge has progressed through the system.
Awaiting an email with the cav dpa manual from cyrush.

I now have the 16 page instruction book. It is findable with google, sadly too big for the forums. If anybody wants a copy I can email it for free.
