Chainsaw chain.

I find that log chains dont cut very well:laughing:

seriously, dont over think it. I cut ties and electric poles with just whatever saw I happen to grab. Worst think it can do is dull it out and you'll have to re-sharpen.

I've used whatever is on the saws at the time too. If I had a choice before starting, I would put on semi chisel for ties.

If the RR tie has dirt and rocks on it or in the cracks, I would be concerned. I would not cut in the spike area or at the ends if the steel S is in the end of the tie. If the tie is solid without cracks you should be good. You might consider a chain or blade that is already worn.

I would grab the oldest POS chain I had for cutting RR ties.

Any old chain I had, plus have lots of spare chains on hand.:2cents:

Use one that you're ready to toss anyway and grind the 'rakers' down a bit extra when you sharpen for the job. Brush a bit of #2 or kero on the bar & chain if they gum-up with creosote when cutting. Embedded gravel/sand will be 'the end' of the chain ...

Do not get the creosote on your skin. learned that the hard way as a teen whilst taking an old bridge apart.
