About 3 1/2 years ago, my brother picked this 041AV electronic up for me at a yard sale for $75. It was in terrible shape, with cracks in everything except the engine case halves. I didn't take any pics of it upon teardown, so I apologize for nothing noting its condition to begin with. It's been over three years of finding parts, sandblasting, repainting, and rebuilding. Everything on it is authentic stihl componentry, and everything from the crank out was inspected and replaced if it showed any signs of use or wear. It's as close to factory as I believe you'll ever find, right down to the paint. So without boring you guys any further, here are the pics I have of the rebuild...

Beautiful saw. What's it worth now?

Sweet.

I got rid of the best saw I ever owned, 041 Farm Boss c.1976 because parts were getting too hard to find.

The 046 Magnum I replaced it with has more power and a whole lot more plastic. The handle bar is mounted in the side of the gas tank with a couple sheet metal screws. ( not a full wrap handle like you'd think you'd find on a commercial grade saw )and twice I've hit the bar with something, sheared the screws out and have to replace the plastic gas tank.....at 150 bucks/pop.

I changed to Husky.

I have no idea the cash value...besides the $75 my brother ponied up to buy it, I'm in it for about $400-450, so I doubt I'll ever make a profit...but that was never the point, I just wanted to see it new again:)

I actually had the opposite...I ran huskys for years and endured a ton of failures, finally settling on my ms362 stihl, and I couldn't be happier with it...I guess there's good and bad to be had in every brand...the dealer support here makes the Stihl worthwhile. Husky was almost nonexistent

My dad bought an 041AV brand new in 1978. I still use it today. Weighs a ton, but has a wonderful deep-throated idle. Made in West Germany.

Yup...the definitely have a different sound than todays saws. I think mine is on the older end of the spectrum...not old enough to be a points ignition, but not new enough for a chain brake. If I remember correctly, the Stihl website says the 041ave's were made from 1967-1973. The 041 in various incarnations was around for a LONG time, so I had to be careful buying parts...and there were several I ordered that were just plain wrong for the saw, but were close enough that they were obviously for some version of the saw...And yes...as my grandpa woulda said..."heavier than a dead preacher";-)
