Front driveshaft Jinma

ok, I am on my third time putting the cv bearings back in the front driveshaft of my 01 jm 254. Can anyone point me towards a permanent solution? Unfortunately, I am getting pretty good at this now........

Are you talking about the steel balls on both ends of the driveshaft? Six on each end? If yes, what's happening? Is your driveshaft just dropping on it's own? Or are you performing some particular task when it happens?

Yes, the circlip is popping off, and sliding back on the shaft, allowing the balls to drop... This time, I wasn't even working it. I have been, the last few days, moving snow (20 plus inches in the last month). However, today, I was just trying to move it back to the garage. It's been a rough month, between the mentally challenged Volvo, the "POP" then no run honda, the vandalized honda, and the snow. Waah.

Circlip? Where exactly is this circlip located?

Is yours like the linked drawing below? I don't recall a circlip. The front cup slides onto the front diff input shaft and is pinned there, with the 6 splined driveshaft end and balls going into the forward cup. The rear cup fits on the longer splines at the rear and can slide. It rides against a spring in compression to hold the shaft fully engaged in the cups.

Is the rear cup not under spring pressure?

Both circlips are supposed to be covered by what the parts list calls a "dust cap". It's #6 in the diagram. I'd call lit a sliding collar. Have you perhaps lost one (or both)? Or does it perhaps not cover the circlip properly? Another possibility is the wrong sized clip. Pretty sure it's 24mm (inside diameter).

I finally fixed mine, got sick of crawling under it all the time. It seems to me only a few of these do this{atleast on a regular basis}. I tack welded a washer to hold the 6 balls in place{only on the front} never had another problem with it after that{have sold it sense}. I figured where the clip grooved in was worn causing it to pop out, inturn causing the balls to fall out in the dust cover. Not saying this is your case, just what happened to me. You may need a new shaft or it could be something else???????

I have never had a problem and I beat my tractor up all the time. That being said I think I remember there being some drive shafts that the feeling was the groove for the clip was not cut deep enough allowing the clip to pop out and then the balls could fall out. Check that groove.

Also Robs fix is excellent. Its probably time to do it to yours.

Great ideas! I just got it into the garage (icy, and an uphill slope...) so will be pulling it apart soon. Thanks! Probably should consider more weight on the rear while I'm at it.

Make sure it's the right size circlip, and make sure the groove is clean it fits in. There is only 1- circlip on this shaft not two ? One of the couplers is held in place with a roll pin,the other coupler slides on the shaft with the spring behind it.Sounds like it's either a worn out coupler, worn shaft ,or the circlip is moving/wrong size.
