I also had problems with my tachometer. I connected a DMM to the sensor lines and read an AC voltage somewhere in the range of 5 volts. I also connected an oscilliscope to it and had a sine wave that the frequency changed as the RPM's of the engine changed. If you have an instrument cluster and all the other gauges are working it is safe to assume there is DC power to the the instrument panel. Those are a few things I did to try and troubleshoot my tach problem
