Snow Differential lock broken on Foton FT404-2009

Unfortunately, we've not been following the instructions on using this feature, with the result it's now broken. The evidence was visible when replacing the oil from the gear box last year, pieces of metal which we presume comes from the "differential lock assembly".

Last winter we put on snow chains on the rear tires, I suppose we'll do that this winter as well.

I guess it's a pretty ambitious task to replace this assembly? Does any forum reader here have experience on the task and expected time it takes to repair the differential lock on a Chinese tractor or any others?

Yes, it will be time-consuming, but to the best of my knowledge you don't have to split the tractor. Pretty sure it involves removing the operator seat, the hydraulic sump, at least one rear wheel, possibly even an axle housing. Going through from the top means you'll likely have to move the PTO drivetrain out of the way as well. I have access to the manuals, but they're about 40 miles away. This is the best I can do for now.

Does it matter which rear wheel to remove? Is there a preferred side to work from?

I wish I could answer that, but I simply don't have the manuals available to be any more definitive.
