Does anyone know if you can tell the age of a Craftsman tractor by the model number?

There's also www.SearsPartsDirect.com put in your model number and all kinds of useful information comes up.

Thanks I tried that, trouble is that it's a Canadian model and Searspartsdirect says no such model found. My model numder starts with 944 and the US models start with 917:mad:

Bummer.

Try this...

Sears Canada Parts Inquiry

It's a fill-in type form and they'll get back with you. It's worth a shot.

The first six digits of the Serial number is the date of manufacture. FYI

Does your Craftsman have a Briggs engine? If so the first two numbers of the Code on the engine is the year the engine was built, gives you a close estimate.

For example, the #'s on my old Sears LT 8:
Model: 195707
Type: 2658901-02
Code: 7785967

The 77 in the Code indicate the year 1977. Tecumseh is a little bit trickier and Im not sure about Kohler, I would have to do some research.
