Craftsman 24HP 42" 917.287261
I have a Craftsman 917.287261 and want to do some maintenance on it.
I only have the Repair Parts Manual and was wondering if there are any specific areas that usually get overlooked when doing general maintenance.

Are there any areas that need to be greased that usually get overlooked?

If you can disassemble your blade spindles put a grease fitting in each one. I have a GT5000 and the spindles can be disassembled. I did this to remove metal particles that might enter when I drilled the hole and tapped it. I found a fingers mark of grease on each spindle so they could have used some grease. I have had the tractor since circ 2002 and still have the same spindles and bearings.

If it is anything like mine these are the grease points! Good luck...

In close proximity to the steering sector gear there will be a sleeve bearing that supports the end of the steering shaft that has a pinion gear attached. Oil that bearing occasionally and the sector gear pivot. The manufacturer didn't make it easy but with a little ingunity it can be done.
