Well... given I don't have money to take it to the shop... I'm going to replace the governor myself. I have a repair manual for the V-Twin... however I'm not too sure about some of the instructions so I may need some help from some of you here.

Here is the progress so far with changing out the governor on my B&S 27 HP V-Twin (446977-0471).

I've ordered a new governor gear (part number 793338 which replaces the original part number 698231). Since I'll need to remove the sump to replace the governor, I've also ordered a sump gasket (or crankcase gasket part number 697227). Got both parts for under $32 which includes shipping.

Here is the step by step getting my engine off the tractor:

Gather up the things you will need. Helper, Tools, and a Bin for parts. I also use small ziplock bags to keep parts in so I don't lose them.

This is as far as we got the first night. My helper's normal bed time is 8pm... but he got to stay up until 10pm helping me. Tonight we hope to get the engine off the tractor and "maybe" open the sump. I don't do this for a living, so if anyone has any suggestions as I'm going along please feel free to chime in. Thanks!

Mark the position of your throttle and choke cables with a sharpie, so that you wont have to monkey with them on re-assembly.

And pull all the tin and shrouds off the motor before you wash it down. Take note of the clearance between the flywheel and the coil pickups.

Here is where I got last night, again with help from Tristan!

First I took off the cables that control the choke and speed:

Then I took off the PTO. This required me to unplug the PTO, take off the air screen on top of the engine, and have Tristan hold the engine from turning while I took the bolt out from the middle of the PTO. Not too hard. A LOT of cleaning to do!

At this point the main drive pulley is only being held up by the tention of the belt. I released the tention by setting the brake and the belt slipped off as did the main drive pulley. Pay no attention to the braker bar next to the pulley, that was still lying there from the PTO removal and was not needed for removal of the main drive pulley.

The next step is to simply remove the four bolts holding on the engine. Pay attention not to misplace the spacers for the two rear bolts (one which holds on a smaller pully).

Next, I removed the sump by removing the 10 bolts holding it in. I did clean the area up first with brake cleaner which worked very well.

And here is the parts of the broken governor which simply fell out of the engine after taking off the sump.

Next: Clean off the old gasket, and put in the new governor gear and gasket and close up the engine (once they arrive which I hope is soon)!
