Air intake modification ideas?

Our TYM's air intake is located low and near the front of the tractor. When conditions are dry, dusty air is easily drawn into the air intake.
We thought we could add pipe or hose onto the air intake and re-route the air intake back along the side of the engine, through the hood and up to a higher stack.

Does anybody have ideas on how we could do this? We can do simple fabrication.

It's been many years since I was a 4X4 pickup modifying youngster but I recall a popular mod back then was a "snorkel" for making 4X4's more likely to survive watercrossings. A little web searching and voila! Have a look here for the general concepts. Need to adapt to the space available for routing and mounting in the TYM but this should give you some ideas:

For the TYM, unless you've got some really bizarre uses in mind, you can probably scale this down a bit and keep in inside the hood.

Do the snorkel idea, and get one of those dust settling 'hat's for it.. IE.. size the pipe fro a standard sediment bowl.. you can get them at tsc.. etc..

Scott, thanks for the PVC snorkel idea. Now to find the air intake hose and figure the best route for the air intake hose and the PVC pipe. (Maybe the air intake hose could come straight up from the air filter canister in the front and connect to the PVC which could run along the center top of the hood towards the back and then up.) Both the hood and side panels need to be removable so the junction between the air intake hose and the PVC would have to mate without actually being permanently connected.

For the snorkel, the only other thought I had was fewer bends = better air flow.

Yep.. If possible go straight fromthe air cleaner thru the hood..

Not sure on the TYM but on the jinmas there was/is a mod that unbolts the intake flange mount (4 bolts that takes the intake inlet flange off) rotate the flange over 180 degrees that sends intake hose back towards operator, then with a slight mod of shortening the hose it bends & comes out of side of cowl and right to the FEL to mount the intake air cleaner assy. this would free up access to battery and keep it from sucking hot under hood air. should be several posts on it here and at NYCTOA site.

have to looks & see if you TYM is similar SCMALTS (spelling?) is one who did this I THINK can't remember for sure.

Thank you all for the very good advice! The project is completed and works great. We found a "cold air " air intake hose at the auto parts dealer for the inside and used ABS for the outside. The mounting hardware is made out of the heavy duty hose clamps we use for our irrigation pipe. Now, it would be nice to put a pre-cleaner on the top of the stack!

Nice looking mod. It would appear at least six feet of extra distance was added for air to travel through. Will this affect how the engine will breathe or cool? I do not know or even have a clue, that is why I am asking.
