Hello,
I just bought a 1986 John Deere 750 4wd w 900 hours. Now I'm shopping for a used bushhog and box blade and waiting for the manual to come in the mail so that I can get it serviced and get to work.
In the meantime I'm looking at all the junk in my old barns to see what might be useful. My place is around 100 years old, and through the years plenty of old farmers have left stuff in the back barn - it now looks like an episode of "Pickers". The problem is that I have no idea what much of it was originally used for, and I don't want to wreck anything that might have a better use.
So I'm thinking of attaching this thing to my 3 pt hitch to "scoop" up some railroad ties. I'd have to modify it some (probably just bolt some sheet metal to it to allow it to carry a wider load). What do you think? IMG-20120701-00221.jpgIMG-20120701-00222.jpg
And I'm thinking of bolting this thing to the front to make a bumper. It looks like a steel beam with a piece of pipe welded to the middle and also some pieces on the sides. Any thoughts on what it originally was? What would be the best position to bolt it on? I want a lot more weight on the front for when I bushhog - any ides on how to make it heavier?

Any thoughts would be appreciated - let me know if I'm doing something stupid. I don't know much about tractors, and I don't want to buy stuff if I have what I need back in my barn.

first off - welcome to TBN. second- I like the carryall idea. Looks durable. just get the cat pins from your local TSC and put on the sides and add toplink tabs . You might want to beef up the corners with a larger gusset or add flat bar/angle iron to side corners. I am guessing at the corner part since I am not there in person to see how heavy/ much flexing there might be. sheet metal or just scrap boards will work.

As for the railroad tie - no idea what it might've been but its a interesting piece for sure. I dont see why not you can use it for front weight and it appears to be ideal since it weight. the price is right ;) just need to fab up some hooks or tabs to fit your tractor.

What is a toplink tab (I don't know any tractor terms yet)? Would this just be a yoke attached to the middle of it to put a pin through?

Welcome.

Sounds like a treasure hunt in your back barn.

Regarding hooking up 3pt rear attachments search the site for i-match, pats quick hitch, quick hitch, and 3 point hitch. You may want the pins on the inside or out depending on the spacing. Also the top link tabs for the three point need to be set properly

Good luck and happy hunting
