I bought a new wheel shaft and am replacing shaft-bushings-shims as needed-seals. I want to put the new axle in place but the clutch keyway groove and the keyway groove on the one gear don't seem to line up? must have turned when I pulled old shaft out. Is their a trick to get this shaft in without having to take all the gears out? I got trans sitting on bench. It is a mid 80's pto model w/8hp kohler. Thanks!

First, I apologize if you have seen this post before, this is the second forum I've placed my query.

I picked up a tiller project today, at my local recycling center. I have no idea what brand it is, I can't find any nameplate or markings. Even the engine is unmarked, except for the Carter carb.

The one weird thing is the belt drive is in the front, most tillers I've seen have it behind the engine.

I have attached a few photos to help, any ideas would be appreciated!

Hi, I've been searching the internet for two weeks trying to solve a problem I am having with my old Troy-bilt horse. I bought this this tiller on cl and paid $200.00 for it. I have become almost obsessed with this old tiller. Its probably a 1974, it has the hh60 engine. I love the idea of being able to take this 39 year old tiller and keep it running. The tiller is in actualy pretty good condition. It has some obvious leaks around the gear box and and axle around both wheels. It has the electric start which fires it up in 2 to 3 attempts every time. My problem is this. The engine seems to run very strong, when I go to start tilling the engine will bog down and some time cut out when I try to till half way down the drag bar on already broken ground. I can see the governor working. I guess my question is, Is this engine simply worn out? The previous owner just had a tune up before I bought it (at least thats what he said). Does this sound like a wore out engine or simple carb adjustment. Thanks in advance.

My recoil starter has never worked right. I took it apart and cleaned and oiled the mechanism, used loctite on the little bolt and it worked OK for a short while. I took it apart today and it has "grenaded" inside the housing. Its on a 7hp Kohler which starts on the first pull everytime so my question is: Has anyone ever converted it over to the old style rope and pulley? I've had enough of the tempermental recoil starter!
