Wondering if the new Boomers are as reliable and well made as the ones from a few years ago. I have a TC26DA and am thinking about trading up to a slightly larger machine, mainly for bigger loader. Very happy with the TC26DA though and don't want to make any very expensive mistakes. Looking around, I see that the Kubotas don't really give you much more loader when you go to a 30 or 35 hp tractor, but the New Hollands apparently do, if Tractordata is right. Also looking at MF and Bobcat, but think I'd rather stay blue if all else is right.

The only negative about the TC26 DA is the oft-mentioned boner of putting the HST pedal and the brake pedals on the same side of the tractor, though I have been considering making some kind of lever attachment to work the HST pedal so my foot could use the steering brakes, but the motivation for actually doing it hasn't come forward, lol. So, I just keep the brake pedals locked.

I am having trouble with the rear PTO on my 2006 TC34DA, and am hoping to tap the TBN knowledge base for some help and direction. Any ideas would be most welcome.

This year I decided to have the spring maintenance done by a professional, so someone with more experience than me could look for any problems or issues which I wouldn't even see. I took the tractor to a well known equipment dealer; they don't sell New Holland, but do know tractors and hydraulics. The service included oil change; replace all filters (oil, 2 hydraulic, fuel); axle fluid and hydraulic fluid check (drain a bit, look for metal flakes, water, other bad stuff) then top off; grease all fittings.

I am telling you all of this because I had just gotten the tractor back a few days before when this PTO misbehaviour showed up. I don't know that there is a connection, but you might think differently.

So the PTO problem: I am not able to disengage the rear PTO as I have been for the past three years and 350 hrs. This has only happened a few times, but has become increasingly difficult very. I rely on the rear PTO for rotary mower work, primarily. Since retrieving the tractor from the maintenance service place, l probably engaged & disengaged the PTO/mower a couple dozen times over a few days before this problem showed up.

I am not really sure how I was able to eventually disengage the PTO the times this happened. I tried a myriad of things, and not sure what worked. I changed engine/PTO speed, I shifted gears, in gear, out of gear, turned on my headlights (OK, kidding about that one). I even tried killing the engine, then moving the lever in and out, but then wasn't able to restart.

I said this problem only manifested a few times (six? eight?). During two or three of the "eventually successful" attempts to disengage, I managed to only partially disengage (I'm guessing here, cuz I don't know how the PTO drive is configured inside). I assume there is a similar spline on the interior end of the shaft that sticks out the back, and moving the on/off lever outside moves a female over that shaft to engage the spline. But these two or three times I heard very audible clicking, as if the male and female teeth were clattering over each other.

At some point in all this trial and error, I noticed I had moved the front PTO lever to the "on" position. I have no idea when this happened, and don't know whether that affected anything inside or not. This was the time I had killed the engine, then not been able to restart. When I moved the front PTO lever back the "off" position, I was able to start.

I have checked & lubricated the linkage and both pivots. I have adjusted the final linkage arm, the one connected to the shaft entering the case, made it both longer and shorter by moving the yoke a few threads (quarter inch up and down), with no apparent effect (so I put it back where it started).

Since I bought this tractor (in 2010, w/ 90 hrs on it), disengaging the PTO (ie. moving the lever at the left of the seat rearward to the "off" position) has been not exactly difficult, but certainly not easy or smooth. I only recently learned of the option of doing the engaging/disengaging at low RPM and then changing engine speed when when I was ready to use the mower. The fellow I bought it from was the one who said I needed to engage/disengage up at 540 PTO RPM (~2500 engine RPM).

I can't think of any more info which might help. I tend to write way too much anyway, but want to give all the data possible, in case one of you says, "Oh! That's the problem."

I think it's time for me to suck it up and purchase the repair manual.

I'm looking forward to any help and advice. Thanks.

New Holland 1725 Starter/Glow Plug problem

I have a 1996 New Holland 1725, 4x4, approximately 1500 hours. I have had an intermittent problem with my glow plugs. Then, the glow plug indicator light would not light, and all I can do is crank it for a while until it starts without preheating.

I pulled the glow plugs, grounded the body to the negative side of the battery, and the post to the positive side, and all three glowed red.

I replaced both of the relays that are located under the steering wheel. As far as I can tell, there is no timer controller. I followed the wires from the bus on the glow plugs, and it goes from the glow plugs, up to the ignition switch, and then to the two relays.

I replaced both relays. Now, I can get the glow plugs to preheat, the indicator light will go on, and I am getting close to 12V on the bus that is attached to the plugs.

Now for the problem. If I put both new relays in, I can preheat, but then I can not get the engine to crank. If I take out the relay on the engine side, it will crank, but not go into preheat mode. If I take out the relay on the driver's side, I can get it to preheat, but not start.

Please help! I check all fuses, wire connections. The electric schematic that I got with the tractor only shows one relay (safety-start relay), but not two.

Want to get all the parts together before I pull it and bring to machine shop for resurfacing and turning the crank and boring it out to the next size. Is there a rebuild kit? Where are you guys going for parts? The closest shop is quoting some awfully high parts prices so figured I'd ask and see what advice the group offers.

When I put my 1725 in a high gear, I've lose power when I release the clutch. I replaced the fuel filter, clean the tank, bleed the lines and still power loss. My idle is at 2000 rpm and when I shift into a higher gear, as soon as I left off the clutch the RPMs fall and the tractor wants to quit. I was told to raise the tractor and make sure that the wheels spin freely. I did this and in neutral, they will rotate but what I would consider a restricted pace. If I spin it hard, it won't get one revolution. Maybe that is how it should be, not sure. Also on the 1725 there is the fuel shut off that is connected to the dash to shut it off. I've had times when I would have to push the end of that cable that is next to the fuel pump to get it started. Is that cable connected to the solenoid in the pump? And would that have any effect on my loss of power?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Has anyone out there attempted to add power steering to a Ford 1700?

I saw an old thread from 2007 asking as well, but it didn't appear to go anywhere.
Just curious what the recommended specs might be for the steering valve, cylinder, etc.
And would it be best to hang a belt driven automotive steering pump off of the engine, or use the tractor hydraulics?

Have my eye on an affordable steering valve with power beyond, rated at 5 gpm, so it would be max'd out with the tractor's 5.3 gpm output.
Would I ruin it with 5.3 gpm (let's pretend the 30 year old pump is still strong as ever for argument's sake) ??

Thanks

new member from central VA

now that I'm retired I'd like to learn to fix my 8N whenever there is a problem; for quite a while I have a low battery problem, I just connected my Chevy to start it, but now it refuse to start, I replace the points (adjusted the gap), cleaned the spark plugs, but still no spark (none at the points, and of course, none at the spark plugs).
What is wrong?
I'd like to follow a tutorial/guidelines to explain to me what I need to check, I'm not an electrical engineer but I can check the voltage of my battery with a voltmeter...
I was told that I need to check the coil, but:
1. I'm not sure how to remove the cover, there are 4 bolts on the dash board, and 2 more right over the front axle, do I remove them all, then lift the whole cover?
2. what are the checks to perform on the coil?
3. other checks I should do?
Thanks in advance,

Tc34da hood seal

Was bush-hogging yesterday and seemed like that the tractor was a little underpowered but just figured it was because the fescue was around 4 feet and very thick. While refueling today I saw that pieces of the foam hood seal had been sucked into the air intake hose and was partially clogged. Seems the outer filter caught all of the small foam pieces and I removed the intake hose and cleaned all the foam pieces out. My question is, Is this hood seal necessary? Seems like replacement seals are $65-70 plus shipping which seems totally ridiculous for a piece of sculpted foam. Seems like the hood is a little harder to close but not sure what else might crop up if I do not replace it. Any Thoughts?
