I have done a search and the things i come up with are pretty old, so i wanted some new information.

I have a new to me 30 acre farm. It hasn't been maintained in 5 years or so. I have already started bushhogging it with a 25hp Mahindra and a 5ft bushhog. Yea...its going to take forever, i have figured that out. The land was used for farming some years ago...so basically lots of grass and saplings to cut over and out right now.

Goal is to start using it for organic farming. So I will run a bushhog and a disc and I am not sure from there.

I am thinking the new tractor will need to be around 50hp, is that enough?

I really like the JD 5205 that i have found used for 14,500. I was hoping to spend under 15. I CAN spend anywhere from 10 to 20.

I am not above looking at any brand.... anyone ideas?

In the near future I will be looking for a TLB set up. At this point I am looking in the 24 - 32 HP size and I would like to get the "best bang for my buck". (I like John Deere but in no way am I married to them.) I do not want to spend over 30K. At this point I really like the B26 but would like to know what else is available and/or recommended. Do not need to be able to mow or do any other functions beyond loader and backhoe work. :)

We have an older 24 ton wood splitter that looks really close to this: Amazon.com: 24-Ton Log Splitter with 9 HP Honda Engine: Home Improvement

The one we have is setup like that where it's on a small frame with wheels, it's horizontal (not sure if it can be tilted vertical) and it has a 8HP Briggs engine on it. The splitter itself works well but I think the engine needs to be tuned up. It's rarely used.

Anyway, before I put it on ebay or something, I have no idea what a fair price is. What do you think? Assume that it works but may need a good tune up on the engine. What would your thoughts be on the asking price?

Im new to this site and need some advice. My mother and I have around 200 acres and looking for an "All in One" tractor to do just about anything with. We will be dealing with mostly hay and some plowing (not heavy plows). What we are looking at right now is a Kubota m7040/cab/4WD/loader. Will that do what we want. We mostly want to do round and square bales. There will be times to take this across the county and help others with their hay fields. Any comments about the m7040? Im 6' 7" and shes around 5' 10". Im thinking the cab because she can be more comfortable when out in the Summer.

We are in Madison, GA

I've just found two tractors in my area that I'm very interested in.
They are both '08 models with 1 year of the warranty used up.
Both are similarly priced; the Kubota at $15,800 and the Kioti at $15000.
Both have less than 100 hours on them with the 50 hour service done.
They both have loaders, HST trannies, and R4 tires.

One is a Kubota L3400 (from an owner), the other is a Kioti CK35 (from a dealer).
Are these used prices too high or about right ?

I have priced these two models new from dealers in my area with the Kubota at about $18000 and the Kioti at about $17500.

I'm going to look at them tomorrow.
I may very well buy one, but right now have no idea which.
Both are models that I have been looking hard at.
I hate this kind of decision, but maybe after I look at them, it will be clearer.
Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks,

Tractor castings, cast iron or steel

This may sound like a dumb question, but on the premise that there are no dumb questions, just dumb answers, here goes:

Are the castings on some tractors cast iron and on others steel ?

By cast iron, I mean the type of metal that could be busted up with a hammer. I understand it's also very hard to weld successfully.

Saw a tractor the other day that someone brought to a dealer that had a 3 pt. hitch backhoe ( I know, that's a no no) and the rear housing was cracked where the top bar attached.

I've also read posts on TBN where castings have also cracked from loader use. And on some of the pictures, I was surprised to see how thin the castings were.

So, I was wondering if the castings on all tractors are cast iron, and if so, could some of them be a tougher grade and/or thicker than others and could some be more/less brittle than others ?

And are any tractor castings actually steel ?

Thanks,
Arky
