Re: Daughter starting summer vacation in a cast
Thanks everyone, for the support. She's been great today and seems to be relatively pain free, although she's pretty tired. It kind of freaks you out when you go running to your screaming child and their arm is all contorted. They managed to get it fairly well realigned, but it needs another look. We found a specialist to visit first thing monday. We suspect it will probably need some pins, but we'll let the experts decide.
You feel so helpless when your child gets hurt like that, but the whole family pulled together. Her little sister was so caring, supportive and scared for her big sis. He handled it well though.I plan to screech to a sideways stop at heavens gate, jump out with a cigar in one hand, a scotch in the other, yelling "WOOHOO!! WHAT A RIDE!!!"

Re: Daughter starting summer vacation in a cast
What a bummer!I hope she does well and heals quickly.
I broke my arm riding a horse with a "loose" saddle when I was 7, I don't remember not being able to play, but I do remember the ice cream and Jello!!

Re: Daughter starting summer vacation in a cast
My daughter had a very similar break at about the same age, both bones, but not as much distortion and she healed great without pins. I make Jokes about my family needs at orthopedic surgeon as our Primary Care DR because every one of us have needed regular visits to them.
She could not play her violin for 8 or 10 weeks as I recall... But she may have enjoyed that
I have and will continue to pray for your daughter to have a full recovery, and a good summer.
Be well,

Re: Daughter starting summer vacation in a cast
Well she got her cast put on today. We originally saw a specialist on Monday, but decided on getting a second opinion. I won't go into details on the original doc, but we almost had a major oversight on their part that could have led to some major problems. Fortunately, we had a bad feeling in the pit of our stomachs that made us question things and get a second opinion.
The specialist we saw today was great! He was able to put a cast on her and then do a little more minipulation of the bones before the cast hardened. What was originally a 10% misalignment is now virtually zero. Hopefully everything stays lined up for the next week, and then she should be in good shape, because the broken ends will be "sticky" and less likely to shift.
We'll keep our fingers crossed and see the doc in a week for another round of xrays to check alignment and progress.I plan to screech to a sideways stop at heavens gate, jump out with a cigar in one hand, a scotch in the other, yelling "WOOHOO!! WHAT A RIDE!!!"

I am so sorry to hear about your little girls injury. My daughter broke her arm at about the same age. Roller skate on the patio. She fell, and I knew we were in trouble when she just would not stop crying. But she healed well and completely, I am sure it was not fun though. Pass along to your little girl we are pulling for her speedy and complete recovery

Re: Daughter starting summer vacation in a cast
Sorry to hear about that, those are terrible breaks. I hope that she is allright! I broke my leg, and had a second operation a few months ago, and then yesterday, I slipped, and injured the same leg, and fractured my other leg. Just as I was leaving the VA Hospital's ER an 1.5 hours from home, my wife called, and said that she was headed to the ER with my three year old daughter. My little girl ran into the pasture, and was kicked in the face my one of our mares. I panicked, and sped to the hospital, the best I could on my leg, and when I got there she was in a CAT scan. She was very lucky, and did not break any bones in her face, nor did effect her eyesight, however the poor thing has a terrible black eye, and swollen face, and forehead on one side. Its a good thing that I wasn't home when it happened because I may have shot the horse. Anyways, I know how you must have felt, and I hope she can still enjoy her summer. One investment I would definitely get is a Xerosox Waterproof Cast Cover. I had one, and I could shower with my thigh high cast on. They say you can swim with it on fine, but I am not sure that I would take that chance. They have both the leg and arm version on Amazon, and they come with a pump, that removes the air from the cover. It is very heavy duty, and the best one that I found. I hope that she feels better! The three links below are for her arm, a half leg, and a full leg. You can search also and find one that will fit if you need to. It may help her enjoy summer a bit more.
