Hi all thought I would share some great news I received. I put in for a PA Council of the Arts grant to study Turning on a Spring Pole Lathe (a traditional non-electric tool). There is a bit of a revival with this tool, and I have been turning using it for the last year. This summer I will be able to study with one of Americas best, Jarrod Stone-Dahl. He is a great craftsman and teacher.
We will be going over forging out hook tools for turning, various aspects of turning too.
I was also able to piggy back a spoon carving segment in the grant.
I have been carving spoons almost daily since Hurricane Sandy hit us, still just utilizing storm damaged or abandoned wood.
I am the first wood worker to receive this award and the first in my county. They were really impressed with my application and I hope to be able
to really grow from this experience.
I have not been posting much, have been very busy, but I still check in.
All the best!
Jeff

Good for you but I sure do hope it isn't funded with tax dollars.

Congrats Jeff aka Forgeblast, have fun with your lathe!
Does the lathe reverse when the pole returns the drive string?

Yes this is a reciprocal lathe, all powered by your legs.

Step down and the lathe spins allowing you to cut, let go and it resets.

It allows you to turn handled cups, etc. Its a really cool tool.

I have a picture of me turning,
and a pile of eating bowls I finished up,
a few turned with a decorative edge, they are milk painted.

They are all food safe and able to be used to eat from.
I will post a full shot of the lathe tonight.
Enjoy!

Lol Harv thanks! It is Tax Funded, and I did figure out what % of the PA state budget my grant was and its a whopping 0.000012698412698412699 :O

Sorry folks just baiting the troll.
It is state funded, by Pennsylvania and is earmarked/can only be used for folk art.
