History:
Bought this tractor with 362 hours. Replaced fuel filters. Tractor now has 422 hours on it. Has run strong. Had one fuel related issue at about 400 hours with a bad connection on the selenoid's 12V clip. The tractor would go dead on me. During the troubleshooting process I drained the tank and replaced the fuel filters AGAIN.
After 20 or so good running hours later, the engine has started missing. Between 1100 and 1500 RPMs, the engine sometimes flutters and will puff white smoke when doing so. It drops a couple of hundred RPM off an on. It doesn't do this all of the time and doesn't seem related to load. It will do it when loaded or when stationary and pressing the accelarator pedal. In trying to troubleshoot this I thought it was trash in the fuel because "the miss" started when I was going up slight hill. I flushed the tank and found some rust flakes. Took the valve off on the bottom of the tank and put a pickup tube on it. I blew the fuel line out to the pre-filter and it was all clear. Didn't see any trash in the valve body. The pre filter looks like new. Put it all back to together and it's still missing.
About 30 hours ago, the injector pump started making a terrible rattling noise. It has the Mico Bosch Rotary Pump. This engine is loud as is and this noise in the pump is overwhelming. Sounds like the pump is about to fly apart, but has been running fine so I put my ear protection on and let 'er rip. Just figured it's the low sulfur fuel and the VE pump cam hitting the piston or the the roller rings. The last couple of fill-ups I've been putting Stanadyne in the tank to help with lube, but the noise hasn't subsided.
My question is could this be the pump or injectors? I'm about ready to pull the pump and injectors have it checked if nothing else to have the noise addressed. Anybody have any experiences with this or have a noisy VE pump?
