I have a Ford 2000 tractor that I purchased recently. It seemed to run OK when I first brought it home even thought it did run fairly rough - not real responsive to giving it more gas. Now, however, it starts the same way but once under power, be it a bush hog, blade or even in gear with a foot on the brake it will run for 30 seconds to a couple of minutes and then completely loose power and die. It will not restart right away but if you leave it set for a minute or two it will re-fire and do the same thing again. Does anybody have any advice for what might be wrong?

Do a tune up...assuming this tractir is gas, replace plugs, distributor cap, rotor, check points in dist. if applicable and replace all filters, especially your fuel filter. It sounds like you are running out of or not getting enough fuel.

Deerefan, thank you for the response. The tractor is gas. I was unable to see a fuel filter. Do you know if it is in the sediment bowl?

Definitely a fuel starvation problem.

1. Check fuel shut off valve (on bottom of tank?)
2. Fuel filter
3. Check inside bottom of fuel tank, the drain (feed) hole may be blocked with crap (look inside tank)
4. remove fuel line from carb, see if you can get good flow. Purge line with air gun to clean.
5. If #4 is ok then remove float bowl, check float position, needle stuck, grit or slime in bowl. Open shut off valve and operate the float by hand to see if you can get good flow and on/off operation of the float needle.

would be really great to know if this is the 3 cyl version with fuel pump and holley ( or repalcement zenith) carb.. or the 4 cyl one with a marvel (or repalcement zenith ) carb.

does sound like fuel.

if the 4 cyl one..t here is a tank fuel screen above the tap.. then on inthe sediment bowl and fuel elbow.

post back more detailed info.

lotsa wheezing starving 3 cyl's out there that become real tractors when you put a zenith carb on them.

does a lil choke seem to help it?

might be a simple fuel pump screen or other screen blocked starving you for fuel.. like at the tank tap.. etc.. however.. those holley carbs are picky.. if it turns out you have good fuel flow to the carb ( easy to pull the line and check ).. then when you rebuild the carb.. take it with you to the NH dealer and the tractor sn to make sure you get the correct kit.. it's been many ford owners experience that non oem holley carb kits have less of a chance of working good... that or you can get a replacement zenith carb.. etc.

Great info. thank you. Indeed choking helps keep it running at times. The previous owner mentioned that he had the carb rebuilt not that long ago. Maybe a bad kit at that time.

deffinately sounds like fuel starvation / lean issue.. could be bad kit... them holley are very finicky. might be fuel flow ahead of the carb as well.
