I have a '57 Ford 861 LP model that I use to cut 15 acres of grass with on a bi-weekly basis...All in all, a very good tractor with factory PS too...

I do have a chronic problem with the gear shift selector shaft, however, that I need some help with...The transmission is a 5 speed unit and sometimes when you move the gearshift handle (shaft) up or down to select the proper gear range transmission oil will come out of the gearshift selector barrel that the gearshift handle goes into. I'm not sure that I'm using the right terminology here but in essence as the gearshift shaft goes up and down when trying to select the proper gear it allows oil to come out of the housing (or barrel) which is attached to the transmission gear shift cover plate... Once the transmission oil escapes it runs down the outside of the transmission...Not Good...Can't stand an oil leak of any kind....

I have talked to some parts folks and they say that there is a seal which is installed internally on the gear shift shaft or in the barrel or shaft linkage to prevent any type of oil from seeping or escaping as I have described. While I don't have an exploded view of the trasmission and gear shift selector area, I've been told the part number of the seal I need is NDA 7288A but I can't find that part number anywhere on a search engine....

If someone has a fix for this issue or knows of a seal which would correct this problem I would appreciate hearing about it very much...

Thanks in Advance for Assistance on this issue...

sure you have an exploded view.. everyone on the internet does. go to the cnh website and do a parts search.. gives you an exploded diagram by section with a parts list.

first thing I'd do is make sure your trans fluid is not overfull..

I'd also sugest getting a service and parts manual for your machine.. good info in those books.. plus the parts diagrams you are looking for...

the seal is listed as no longer available.. though I'd be surprised if you couldn't come up with something that would work via an on the shelf oring or lip seal, based on ID, OD and thickness.

in any event, I'd almost think your tranny was WAY overfull if it is leaking THAT easy.. even with slinging oil and whatnot.

trans level plug is on the right side by yer heel.

see my next post.. I'm doing your work for ya. # 58 is the one ya want.. see the attached diagram.. ( this is one of the ones available from the cnh website.. )

Soundguy...

As usual, you're the one voice I like to hear and have a response from on these old tractors...Thanks for giving a somewhat newbie a lesson on where to look for these exploded views...At least I know (now) to go to the cnh website until I can get the proper manuals...

One more more question if you don't mind...

>> Do I have to remove the transmission cover plate to get to this seal or can it be accessed by just removing the gear shift lever and removing the sequenced compontents until I get to it ..??? Never have been in there but not scared to go in that area either...

It was not my intention for you to do my work (but I do appreciate you taking the time to show me where to look) and...

Thanks Very Much for Your Help...It is Greatly Appprecated...

Regards...

can't say that I've replaced that seal before ( or ever needed to ).. the sequence from the diagram leads you to believe it is top loaded.. but I bet having hte cover off might make it easier, if it is indeed a lip seal and not an oring. Again.. I don't have that seal to look at and havn't done that repair. once you have the nut and shifter off it will likely be a quick decision as to wether it can be repalced or not without pulling the top.

wasn't any help on that last one.

good luck.

once you pull it down you will know if it is a lip seal, ruberized packing, or a square cut or round profile oring.

from there you should be able to figure out how to repalce it and with what.. ie.. conventional lip seal if it does not have a seat.. or an oring or other packing if it does have a seat.

good luck

ps.. post your results.. they stay in the archive.. years from now someone else may have the same issue and benefit from the info in this thread.

check that oil level first though..

Will report back my findings...

10-4 on the fluid level...

Need to get a transmission cover plate gasket first as I feel that's where the action is going to be...

Later...
