I have an 850 that likes to jump out of some gears. It especially likes to jump out of reverse and first. I don't use 4th and 5th too much so I don't know if it likes to jump out of those. Second and third seem fine. It seems that all the gears it likes to jump out of are the ones with the shifter to the rear.

I know that some transmissions have "detent" balls that click the shifter into gear. I have printed off the parts diagrams for the transmission from the New Holland site and can't find any reference to these on this tractor.

Any ideas why it keeps jumping out of gear? I am planning on splitting the tractor later this year since I am pretty sure it needs a clutch (it slips).

I think you may have either printed the wrong diagrams off, or didn't read the parts listing.

ok.. now that I've id'd the plunger and depent springs for ya, you canuse a bit flatblade screwdriver and pull them.

if the nubs have wear, replace them. CNH sells them.

if 4/5 is not worn, which it usually isn't, swap it into one of the others and see if it helps.

jumping out of gear is pretty common on 3 & R as it gets used alot. I have an 850 with a loader that will do it.. especially if you gas on it alot and then let off or go down hill.

I use a bunji to hold it in.

In some cases you get lucky and it's a weak spring or worn detent plunger, many times it's wear in the gearing allowing it to do so. for the heck of it check the shifter forks and rails and make sure it is actually fully shifting into gear in the first place.

Thanks! That was the picture that I had, I just didn't equate "plunger" with "detent" or "ball". I was looking more in the area of part 36. I am taking off tomorrow and will look at them then. Thanks for your help!

I also have an issue with my 961 jumping out of 4th when coasting down a hill. it will stay in gear when a load is on the tranny, when going up a hill. Am i looking at a worn 4th & 5th gear shift fork, part 32 in the diagram?

very doubtfull.. nil in fact.. that a shift fork would make it jump out of gear in that situation.

No. In fact it is perfect in all other gears and i have just not been using 4th. No abnormal noises.

This is an old post so I hope someone sees this my 850 is popping out of 3rd. I can access the 3rd/r detent which has a small amount or wear. I want to check the other two dentents but the other two are blocked partially by the foot board is this normal for the factory one to cover the detects or do I have some form of aftermarket foot boards.
