Ford 8N Hi/Lo question

I just bought this tractor at an auction.
I brought it down a steep hill down to the lake. It had a very hard time getting back up the hill and it stalled out 3 or 4 times. (too much load)

At finally made it back up the hill, and I figured something was wrong because it seemed to have low power. (this is the first tractor I have owned so i guess i don't really know how much power it should have)..But it also has a bucket and backhoe which must add alot of weight.

Anyways, I took the carb off and started cleaning the air filter, fuel filters, wires, rotor, plugs, ..all the normal stuff that would make an engine bog down under load. Then I noticed it has a lever next to the brake pedal on the right side.. I have no idea what it does.
(Its not the pto engage or draft lever)
I have not heard of an 8N with a hi/lo speed lever, but that would make sense for the lack of power if i was in hi gear that whole time.

Do you guys know what it might be?
(I would go try it, but the carb is apart. I will take pics of the lever tomorrow)

is it a bent lever that seems to have two positions???? I have a 600 ford that has the Sherman transmission option which is a splitter that gives you a high and low range. This 600 originally had a mounted trencher. Could be a step up or down

Best guess is that is what you have. Dont break it I have heard parts are hard to come by

Probabally going to need a pic of this lever to say for sure, but the sherman transmission lever was on the LEFT side just in front of the clutch. So I doubt that is it.

What I think the problem is, you have a loader AND backhoe on a grade in a reverse gear that is just flat out TOO high.

If you have just the plain jane 4-speed, reverse is ~6MPH, the same as forward 3rd. so yea, thats a steep gear. When the 8n's were built, they werent geared nearly as low as modern tractors of that size.

IF you do inded have the sherman, that makes it a little better gearing if in low. It can slow the reverse down to 4.5mph, but that is still a bit much IMO.

Heck, my kubota has 4 reverse gears, and the FASTEST one of them is only 4.5mph:confused2:

Go here and look if it is on the right side it could be a Hupp tranmision Sherman Transmissions

It sort of looks like that hupp overdrive transmission lever. Can anyone confirm this? Here are pics. It seems to have 3 positons

I would say it looks like the hupp.

It seems you want to find neutral on the lever, pull it out, and push forward for the lowest gearing.

What position was it in when you had the "lack-of-power" problem??

It was in the position that is all the way down. I think that is direct drive?
I just went out there to try the shifting diagram and the lever does not pull out in any of the positions

Well, what do the other postions do. (the ones you CAN find). Do they make it go faster or slower than where you had it???

I have a Hupp over/under and straight through auxiliary transmission on my 8N. I really like it. I use it mostly in low range. I chose a Hupp because it is geared a little lower than the Sherman auxiliary transmission. Auxiliary transmissions were available as overdrive only and underdrive only transmissions. Yours may be one of the latter, or it may not be shifting properly. If it is an under/over shift it into neutral (auxiliary transmission), pull the lever out and up to engage low range.

it doesn't appear to be a hupp dual drive or overdrive shifter.. or an F&T.. but is on the correct side.

there were many aftermarket manufacturers though.. etc..
